The cost is mostly in mastering discipline, not in money.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Apple Digital Masters?<\/h2>\n<p>Apple Digital Masters (ADM) is the rebranded successor to <strong>Mastered for iTunes<\/strong>, the program Apple launched in 2012 to encourage higher-fidelity deliveries when iTunes was the dominant download store. After Apple Music&#8217;s launch and the broader shift to streaming, the program was renamed to Apple Digital Masters around 2019 and the spec was updated for the modern AAC encoder.<\/p>\n<p>The deliverable from the artist&#8217;s or mastering engineer&#8217;s side is a 24-bit \/ 96 kHz (or 88.2 kHz, 192 kHz, or 176.4 kHz) WAV file, mastered with specific loudness, headroom, and dynamics targets. It is not a separate or upcharge service for most engineers. It is just a delivery format choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Loudness war discipline matters.<\/strong> A master pushed to -8 LUFS with true-peak clipping will not qualify and will sound worse on Apple Music after AAC encoding than a master at -14 LUFS with clean true-peak. Read <a href=\"\/blog\/glossary\/what-is-lufs\/\">LUFS<\/a> for the broader context. Quieter, cleaner masters typically win the AAC round trip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. They are independent flags.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Apple Digital Masters mistakes and gotchas<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Delivering 16-bit instead of 24-bit.<\/strong> The hard floor is 24-bit. A 16-bit \/ 44.1 kHz delivery will not qualify regardless of how clean the master is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>True-peak overshoot on a master that looks clean.<\/strong> Sample-peak limiting at 0 dBFS often results in inter-sample peaks above 0 dBTP after digital-to-analog conversion.
