One of them was Luanda, and the choice says more about where Angolan music is going than any chart position does.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicinafrica.net\/magazine\/apple-music-spotlights-luanda-africa-month-2026\">Sounds of Luanda playlist<\/a>, reported by Music In Africa, was curated by producer Teo No Beat, singer Anna Joyce and rapper Prod\u00edgio, with a companion DJ mix from DJ Malvado featuring AfroKillerz, Djeff and DJ Waldo. Semba, kizomba, kuduro and tarraxinha, packaged for a global audience.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at home, an Angolan songwriter earns 3 kwanzas when a radio or television station plays their record. That is well under a US cent.<\/p>\n<h2>Angola routes everything through one body<\/h2>\n<p>Angola consolidated collective management in 2023. AUDAC, the Associa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00danica de Direitos Autorais e Conexos, was created in February of that year and received its operating certificate in May, becoming the country&#8217;s single collection entity for authors&#8217; rights and neighbouring rights.<\/p>\n<p>The published mechanics, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expansao.co.ao\/angola\/interior\/autores-de-musicas-vao-receber-70-dos-valores-de-direitos-de-autor-113249.html\">Expans\u00e3o<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rights holders receive 70% of collections. AUDAC retains 30%.<\/li>\n<li>Broadcast minimum is 3 Kz per transmission on radio and television.<\/li>\n<li>Streaming is tariffed at 9% of what the subscriber pays.<\/li>\n<li>Works must be registered with SENADIAC, the national copyright registry.<\/li>\n<li>The author must also be affiliated to a collective management association, either SADIA or UNAC-SA, which sit under AUDAC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tariff table drew immediate pushback when it landed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opais.ao\/cultura\/audac-desdramatiza-polemica-a-volta-dos-valores-de-direitos-autorais-e-conexos\/\">OPa\u00eds<\/a> reported musicians protesting from May 2023, with off-peak plays between midnight and 4am valued at 3 kwanzas and prime-time slots reaching 15 to 70 kwanzas depending on the station&#8217;s reach. AUDAC director Lucioval Gama defended the model on volume. Composer Dom Caetano called it a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<h2>None of that is your streaming money<\/h2>\n<p>This is the part Angolan artists most often get wrong, and it is not unique to Angola. AUDAC handles public performance and broadcast. It is the songwriter and neighbouring-rights lane.<\/p>\n<p>Your master recording income from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Boomplay and Audiomack does not travel through SENADIAC or AUDAC. It arrives through whoever delivers your catalogue to those platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Angola&#8217;s own history here is instructive. SADIA licensed the streaming service Wena Music, built by Kiandastream and launched in 2022 across ten African markets including Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Namibia. SADIA had earlier signed digital agreements covering TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Deezer, Triller, Audiomack and YouTube, as <a href=\"https:\/\/forbesafricalusofona.com\/plataformas-digitais-vao-gerar-rendimentos-aos-autores-angolanos\/\">Forbes \u00c1frica Lus\u00f3fona<\/a> reported. Useful licensing. Still the publishing side of the ledger.<\/p>\n<h2>The distributors already moved<\/h2>\n<p>ONErpm appointed Nuno Rocha as Head of Business Development for Portugal, the Lusophone and Francophone African territories and MENA, and announced a Luanda office, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/nuno-rocha-appointed-head-of-business-development-for-mena-lusophone-and-francophone-markets-at-onerpm\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a>. Its Angola team works alongside its Brazil marketing staff, treating the two as one circuit.<\/p>\n<p>That is the real read on Luanda. Roughly 300 million Portuguese speakers, and Luanda is the largest Lusophone city outside Brazil. An Angolan release is a Brazil release, a Portugal release and a Mozambique release before it is anything else.<\/p>\n<h2>What an Angolan artist or label should fix this quarter<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Register works with SENADIAC and affiliate with SADIA or UNAC-SA. That is the only route into the 70% pool, and it is separate from your distribution deal.<\/li>\n<li>Check that your distributor actually delivers to Boomplay and Audiomack, not just the global four. Angolan and diaspora listening splits across both.<\/li>\n<li>Set writer and producer splits at delivery, not after the money lands. Kuduro and afro house records with four or five credited contributors are where splits disputes start.<\/li>\n<li>Treat Brazil and Portugal as primary markets in your release plan, not overflow.<\/li>\n<li>Keep artist and territory metadata clean. Editorial teams at Apple Music and Spotify cannot pitch what they cannot identify as Angolan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Angola&#8217;s collection system is young, centralised and paying real if modest money. The streaming side is where the growth is, and it runs on delivery quality and splits accuracy.
