IFPI credits the global pull of m\u00fasica mexicana.<\/p>\n<p>Over the same stretch, at least 10 of Mexico&#8217;s 32 states have restricted narcocorridos at public events, and Mexico City joined them in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Those two facts are not in conflict. They sit on different revenue layers, and only one layer is being regulated.<\/p>\n<h2>What the market data actually says<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Global recorded music revenue reached $31.7 billion in 2025, up 6.4%, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-recorded-music-revenues-hit-31-7bn-in-2025-up-6-4-yoy-users-of-paid-music-subscriptions-reach-837m\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Latin America grew 17.1%, a sixteenth consecutive year of growth, with streaming at 88.1% of regional revenue.<\/li>\n<li>Mexico&#8217;s climb to No. 10 is credited to m\u00fasica mexicana, label investment and easier cross-border streaming.<\/li>\n<li>Spanish-language music took 9.4% of US streams in the first half of 2026, out of 732.7 billion on-demand audio streams, per Luminate&#8217;s midyear report as <a href=\"https:\/\/1069thefox.com\/news\/030030-latin-and-country-surge-in-the-us-as-more-music-is-being-streamed-than-ever-before\/\">reported by the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The restrictions land on the stage, not the stream<\/h2>\n<p>Every measure passed so far targets live performance and public events. None pulls a track from a DSP. DSP means digital service provider, the streaming platforms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mexico City&#8217;s Congress approved a reform on 26 May 2026 by 44 votes, amending the Law for the Celebration of Public Spectacles to bar music glorifying violence or organized crime at concerts, festivals, palenques, stadiums, plazas and schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informador.mx\/mexico\/narcocorridos-prohibidos-en-cdmx-se-suma-a-jalisco-y-esta-lista-de-estados-20260527-0098.html\">per El Informador<\/a>. Venues that ignore it risk closure and permanent loss of their licenses.<\/li>\n<li>Michoac\u00e1n&#8217;s prohibition took effect on 17 April 2025, and fine revenue there funds children&#8217;s orchestras. Aguascalientes attached custodial penalties. Nayarit published its decree on 4 February 2025.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sopitas.com\/noticias\/donde-estan-prohibidos-narcocorridos-mexico-estados-municipios\/\">Sopitas counts<\/a> Baja California, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Quintana Roo, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoac\u00e1n, Aguascalientes, Quer\u00e9taro and the State of Mexico.<\/li>\n<li>There is no federal ban. President Claudia Sheinbaum says she opposes prohibition and censorship, and that these are state and municipal calls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The federal alternative is a talent contest<\/h2>\n<p>M\u00e9xico Canta, run by the Secretar\u00eda de Cultura under Claudia Curiel de Icaza, is a binational competition for artists in Mexico and the US built around songs free of violence and drug glorification. The 2026 edition is centred on regional Mexican music.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Registration closed 10 June 2026. Semifinals ran 24 and 31 July, with two more on 23 and 30 August.<\/li>\n<li>The final is 13 September at the Auditorio Nacional, followed by a Z\u00f3calo performance on 15 September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/music\/articles\/m-xico-canta-2026-focuses-185107696.html\">as Billboard&#8217;s Latin desk reported<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curiel de Icaza&#8217;s framing is a market claim as much as a cultural one: around 70% of Mexican and Latin music consumed on streaming platforms, she said, is regional Mexican.<\/p>\n<h2>What this changes for a working act<\/h2>\n<h3>Treat live and streaming as separate books<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Public performance income in restricted states is now a permitting question, decided venue by venue.<\/li>\n<li>Streaming income is untouched by these laws, and it is largely earned abroad. Spotify&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2026-03-11\/loud-and-clear-music-economics-highlights\/\">2026 Loud and Clear update<\/a> reports that artists take more than half their royalties from outside their home country within two years of debuting.<\/li>\n<li>Budget accordingly: a cancelled palenque date does not move your Spotify or Apple Music line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Fix the metadata before someone else decides for you<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Explicit flags, clean genre tagging and accurate writer splits are what let a catalogue survive a review, whether the reviewer is a venue, a promoter or a platform.<\/li>\n<li>Register works with SACM for author royalties, and with ANDI and EJE for performer and producer neighbouring rights. CMO means collective management organisation, the body that licenses public performance on your behalf.<\/li>\n<li>If most of your listeners are in the US, your reporting needs to show US earnings by track, not one lumped payout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The distribution read<\/h2>\n<p>Mexico is the clearest current case of a market where the charts are local and the money is cross-border. That gap is an operations problem, not a talent problem: territory-level reporting, correct rights metadata, payout rails that work in both currencies.
