More Than Half Its Music Money Still Comes From Radio."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNTOLD opens in Cluj-Napoca today and runs through August 9, spanning Cluj Arena, Central Park and the Some\u0219 riverbank. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jambase.com\/festival\/untold-festival-2026\">Jambase lists the 2026 edition as August 6 to 9<\/a>, headlined by Martin Garrix, Kygo, Carl Cox and The Chainsmokers.<\/p>\n<p>It is also not where most Romanian recorded-music money comes from.<\/p>\n<h2>The revenue mix is the story<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/musically.com\/2025\/08\/19\/country-profile-romania-2025\/\">Music Ally&#8217;s Country Profile on Romania<\/a> breaks the market down in a way that should stop any distributor from copy-pasting a Western European playbook here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Performance rights: 54.3% of recorded-music revenue.<\/li>\n<li>Streaming: 40.5%, growing 24.0% year on year.<\/li>\n<li>Physical: 4.8%, up 63.9%, driven mostly by CDs.<\/li>\n<li>Downloads and other digital: 0.3%. Sync: 0.1%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read that first line again. In Romania, radio, TV, cable retransmission and public performance in bars, gyms and shops still out-earn every stream combined.<\/p>\n<p>Streaming is closing the gap fast, and its growth splits almost evenly between paid subscriptions, ad-supported audio and ad-supported video. That last bucket matters more here than almost anywhere in the EU, because Romanian listening skews heavily to YouTube.<\/p>\n<h2>Two rails, two calendars<\/h2>\n<p>CMO means collective management organisation, the body that licenses music to broadcasters and venues and then splits the money among rightsholders. Romania has three that matter to a release.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ucmr-ada.ro\/\">UCMR-ADA<\/a> for authors and composers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/upfr.ro\/\">UPFR<\/a> for phonogram producers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/credidam.ro\/wp\/\">CREDIDAM<\/a> for performers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your distributor delivers to Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and Deezer, and that recording revenue lands monthly. The 54.3% does not move on that rail at all.<\/p>\n<p>Look at what CREDIDAM is doing right now. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/credidam.ro\/wp\/program-repartitie-iunie-2026\/\">June 2026 distribution notice<\/a> covers Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 usage, from money collected between December 6, 2025 and May 31, 2026, across radio, TV, cinema, cable, public communication and internet. Transfers began June 15, 2026 and continue through July.<\/p>\n<p>A performance that aired in October 2025 pays in mid-2026. That is a normal CMO cycle, and a brutal shock to an artist who has only ever read distribution statements. <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/greece-spotify-top-20-entirely-greek-rap-songwriter-royalties-pay-twice-a-year\/\">Greece runs a twice-yearly songwriter cycle<\/a> for the same structural reason.<\/p>\n<h2>Declared repertoire, or nothing<\/h2>\n<p>CREDIDAM calculates splits proportionally to actual use of the repertoire each performer has declared, matched against playlists submitted by broadcasters and venues. Undeclared recordings do not match. They sit.<\/p>\n<p>UCMR-ADA runs the publishing-side version of the same problem, maintaining a standing public register of <a href=\"https:\/\/ucmr-ada.ro\/membri\/opere-muzicale-neidentificate\/\">opere muzicale neidentificate<\/a>, unidentified musical works whose money is waiting on someone to claim it.<\/p>\n<p>ISRC means International Standard Recording Code, the unique identifier stamped on every recording. Clean ISRCs through your distributor are the cheap half of the job. Registering the same works and performances with the societies is the half most self-releasing manele and dance acts skip.<\/p>\n<h2>The indie that outguns the majors on radio<\/h2>\n<p>Romania is also home to the strongest independent case study in Central and Eastern Europe, and a useful counterweight to the pattern in <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/poland-is-a-top-16-music-market-growing-14-its-charts-are-almost-all-polish-rap-and-a-third-of-streams-are-free\/\">Poland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/swedens-streaming-market-grew-2-its-songwriters-rule-the-hot-100-the-money-lives-offshore\/\">Sweden<\/a>. Global Records founder \u0218tefan Lucian told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/with-40bn-streams-75m-revenues-last-year-and-double-digit-growth-forecast-for-2026-romanias-global-records-is-redefining-indie-success-in-central-and-eastern-europe\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a> the company hit roughly 65 million euros, about 75 million dollars, in 2025 revenue and passed 40 billion cumulative streams, up from 25 billion in spring 2024.<\/p>\n<p>His line on the market is worth pinning above a desk: &#8220;Romania, for instance, is the only market we are aware of where an independent company holds a larger radio market share than the majors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.believe.com\/investors\/newsroom\/believe-partnership-global-records\">bought a 25% stake in Global Records in July 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What a Romanian release needs in 2026<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Treat YouTube as a primary commercial market, not a promo channel.<\/li>\n<li>Register works and performances with UCMR-ADA and CREDIDAM before release, not after the song charts.<\/li>\n<li>Budget for the lag. Distribution pays monthly, the societies pay on a six-to-nine-month cycle.<\/li>\n<li>Keep radio-facing metadata identical to delivered metadata. Playlist matching is a string-comparison problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Delivering to the DSPs is table stakes. Knowing that a Romanian catalogue has a second, slower, larger revenue stream sitting in three separate societies is what changes an artist&#8217;s actual take. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, and DDEX-native delivery matters here for an unglamorous reason: it keeps identifiers intact from delivery through to reporting, so the metadata a society matches against is not degraded on the way out.<\/p>\n<p>Romania grew fast last year.
