For the first time since 2000, the Petrovaradin Fortress above Novi Sad is empty in July. EXIT, the festival that put Serbia on the European touring map, is not there.<\/p>\n

Instead it is on the road. DJ Mag reported<\/a> that EXIT’s 2026 edition is a multi-country tour rather than a single event, and Resident Advisor listed the same legs<\/a>: Croatia and North Macedonia in June, Malta, Egypt in October, India in November.<\/p>\n

The reason is political. EXIT backed the student protests that followed the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, and public co-financing was withdrawn at every level of government. The organisation crowdfunded 1.5 million euros to stay alive.<\/p>\n

The scale of what left matters. Serbian Monitor reported<\/a> that EXIT generated more than 300 million euros in tourism revenue for Serbia across 26 years, and cited a CNN estimate valuing the festival’s contribution to Serbia’s international promotion at roughly 80 million dollars a year.<\/p>\n

What is left is the recorded side, and it was always the weaker one<\/h2>\n

Serbia has one collective management organisation for songwriting. A CMO, or collective management organisation, is the body that licenses public performance and broadcast and pays composers and publishers.<\/p>\n

That body is SOKOJ. Per its own filings<\/a>, it has operated since 1956 and represents more than 12,000 domestic authors plus around 4.5 million foreign rightsholders through reciprocal deals with over 100 societies.<\/p>\n

Its collection history is instructive. CISAC recorded<\/a> that SOKOJ only settled with the national public broadcaster RTS in 2015, restructuring unpaid royalties running from December 2006 to June 2014 across a five-year payment plan. CISAC’s regional director described years in which RTS had systematically denied payment.<\/p>\n

Monitoring caught up later still. SOKOJ signed with ACRCloud in May 2023<\/a> for real-time audio recognition on Serbian television, which managing director Dejan Manojlovi\u0107 framed as the route to fairer distribution.<\/p>\n

Local repertoire is a small slice of local streaming<\/h2>\n

Spotify only reached Serbia in August 2020, in the same wave that opened Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Slovenia and Albania.<\/p>\n

Emerging Europe’s reporting on that launch<\/a>, quoting RUNDA vice-president Nikola Jovanovi\u0107 and CEEMID’s Daniel Antal, found the regional pattern that still describes Serbia: domestic producers held 30 to 50 percent of the physical market but under 10 percent of streaming. The gaps named were distribution and marketing infrastructure, not talent.<\/p>\n

The independent sector organised around exactly that. RUNDA, the regional association of independent labels, was founded in October 2018 with IMPALA’s backing<\/a> by Menart, Dallas Records, Dancing Bear, Kontra, IDJ, Moonlee, NIKA and Ammonite, covering Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia.<\/p>\n

The practical read for a Belgrade label<\/h2>\n

Serbian repertoire has an audience that ignores borders. One release is commercially live in seven territories plus the Austrian, German, Swiss and Swedish diaspora, and the Balkan Top 100<\/a> exists because the chart logic is regional, not national.<\/p>\n
