Iceland has fewer people than Coventry. It also has a statutory music fund, a 78-year-old collecting society, and a Grammy winner whose records are licensed to a Sony-owned company in America. All three facts belong in the same story.<\/p>\n

On 8 January, Iceland Music announced the first 2026 allocation from the Music Fund: nearly ISK 92 million spread across 80 projects<\/a>, chosen from 342 applications. The City of Reykjav\u00edk added ISK 11 million to the pot.<\/p>\n

That is under a million dollars, for an entire national music sector, in one round.<\/p>\n

What 92 million kr\u00f3nur actually buys<\/h2>\n

The fund splits across creation and publishing, live performance, development and infrastructure, and export. The largest export marketing grants went out at ISK 1.7 million each, to \u00c1sgeir, El\u00edn Hall and Da\u00f0i Freyr. In dollar terms that is a low five-figure sum per artist.<\/p>\n

Meaningful money in a market this size. Not a career. A grant covers a campaign, not the twelve months after it, and it does not touch recorded-music income at all.<\/p>\n

The publishing rails just changed<\/h2>\n

STEF, Iceland’s collecting society, was founded in 1948 by a group of composers led by J\u00f3n Leifs. A CMO, meaning collective management organisation, licenses and collects on behalf of songwriters rather than labels. STEF’s own numbers are modest: roughly 6,700 registered songwriters, more than 70,000 registered works, and payouts to over 2,000 Icelandic rightsholders across twelve distributions a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From 1 January 2026, STEF began a phased onboarding to the ICE Core alongside Finland’s Teosto and Norway’s TONO. ICE is the multi-territory licensing and processing hub jointly owned by PRS for Music, STIM and GEMA. ICE says the three societies represent more than 95,000 members<\/a>, and that ICE Core has licensed over 100 multi-territory services across 245-plus territories.<\/p>\n

TONO chief executive Karl Vestli framed the move plainly: the agreement gives “a broader international network, more competitive terms, and faster payouts.”<\/p>\n

Translation for a Reykjav\u00edk songwriter: your Spotify and YouTube publishing share stops being processed by a society with 6,700 writers on file and starts being processed by a hub built for hundreds of thousands. Small-market CMOs are outsourcing digital because digital does not reward small scale.<\/p>\n

Where the recording money lives<\/h2>\n

Iceland’s biggest current export makes the point without commentary. Laufey’s third album, A Matter of Time<\/em>, arrived in August 2025 on her own Vingolf Recordings under exclusive licence to AWAL. AWAL is the artist services company Sony Music bought from Kobalt for $430 million, a deal cleared by the UK competition regulator in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So the structure is: Icelandic artist, Icelandic-named imprint, ownership retained, distribution and services bought from a major-owned company headquartered elsewhere. That is the modern small-market export template, and it reads well next to how Sweden’s songwriters end up with their money offshore<\/a> and how Germany’s charts stay local while its rails do not<\/a>.<\/p>\n
