The number it brought to the announcement: Turkish music has passed 294 billion all-time streams on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>That is the recording side of Turkey&#8217;s music economy, and it works. The publishing side is a different story.<\/p>\n<h2>The streaming numbers are not the problem<\/h2>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-opens-istanbul-office-as-turkish-music-tops-294-billion-all-time-streams-on-the-platform\/\">Music Business Worldwide&#8217;s reporting on the office launch<\/a>, the growth is broad rather than one breakout act:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turkish music streams grew more than 190% over five years, with domestic streams up more than 200%.<\/li>\n<li>Export streams expanded roughly 70 times over eleven years.<\/li>\n<li>92.5 million unique international users streamed Turkish artists in April 2026 alone.<\/li>\n<li>Local artists took 65% of streams inside Turkey in 2025, up from 11% in 2013.<\/li>\n<li>More than 90% of the Spotify Top 50 Turkiye chart is by Turkish artists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkiyetoday.com\/culture\/spotify-bets-bigger-on-turkiye-after-2025-storm-3213797\">Turkiye Today<\/a> lists the top destinations for Turkish-language listening as Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. That is a diaspora map, and it should shape release timing.<\/p>\n<h2>The songwriter side is ranked 37th<\/h2>\n<p>MESAM is Turkey&#8217;s main CMO for composers, lyricists and arrangers. CMO means collective management organisation, the body that licenses public performance and collects songwriter royalties on members&#8217; behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/tr\/kultur\/mesamin-telif-geliri-4-yilda-25-kat-artti\/3773614\">Anadolu Agency in December 2025<\/a>, MESAM president Recep Ergul said the society&#8217;s copyright income had risen 25 times in four years, moving it to 37th in the world by collections from near the bottom of the international table, with a stated target of the top 20.<\/p>\n<p>Growth of 25 times off a small base is still a small base. Ergul&#8217;s own examples of the licensing frontier make the point: 21,000 hotels brought under licence, and a wedding tariff of 58 lira per event.<\/p>\n<p>Then on 29 July 2026, MESAM and MSG, the parallel society for music work owners, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurriyet.com.tr\/kelebek\/stil\/msg-ve-mesamdan-yeni-adim-rams-parkta-kullanilan-muzikler-lisans-kapsaminda-43254953\">signed a licensing protocol with Galatasaray<\/a> covering music played in public areas at RAMS Park. Turkey&#8217;s best-attended stadium became a licensed music venue this summer, not decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>MESAM distributes to members quarterly and collects directly from Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Deezer, TikTok and Instagram, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesam.org.tr\/blog\/makaleler\/dijital-telifin-oncusu-mesam-ile-sanatci-haklari-guvende\">its own member documentation<\/a>. Sixteen thousand members share that pool.<\/p>\n<h2>2025 showed what single-platform exposure costs<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>4 July 2025: Turkey&#8217;s Competition Authority opened an investigation into Spotify covering pricing, playlist practices and royalty distribution.<\/li>\n<li>July 2025: Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Batuhan Mumcu publicly attacked playlist content as incompatible with national values.<\/li>\n<li>19 August 2025: Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy confirmed Spotify would stay and open an Istanbul office.<\/li>\n<li>January 2026: RTUK, the broadcast regulator, ordered Spotify to remove catalogue content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None of that sequence was about music. Any artist whose income sat entirely on one platform spent six weeks in 2025 watching a political dispute decide their revenue.<\/p>\n<h2>What a Turkish release should look like in 2026<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Register your works with MESAM or MSG. That money is separate from your distributor&#8217;s payments and does not arrive automatically because a track is live.<\/li>\n<li>Deliver past the global three. YouTube Music, Apple Music and Deezer matter, and so do the local services Fizy and Muud, plus Anghami for the MENA overlap Turkish pop already reaches.<\/li>\n<li>Treat Germany as a primary market, not an export afterthought. Ad spend and playlist pitching should follow the diaspora ranking above.<\/li>\n<li>Document splits at delivery, not after the first payout. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the messaging standard DSPs use to receive metadata, and contributor shares registered at that layer survive a catalogue audit.<\/li>\n<li>Ask a prospective distributor which Turkish and regional stores it delivers to. Coverage of Anghami, Yandex Music and the local Turkish services is a real differentiator, and most global-first distributors lack it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Turkey holds one of the ten largest non-English repertoires on Spotify and a songwriter society still fighting its way into the global top 20. Until those two lines converge, most of a Turkish artist&#8217;s money will arrive through the recording rail.
