The country still has roughly 300,000 people paying for a music subscription.<\/p>\n<p>Both figures come from the same industry body. They describe two different businesses.<\/p>\n<h2>The first full audit of the Bulgarian market<\/h2>\n<p>In October 2025, the Bulgarian Association of Music Producers (BAMP) published the first comprehensive study of the country&#8217;s music rights economy, written by music policy researcher Virgo Sillamaa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bta.bg\/en\/news\/economy\/998733-first-comprehensive-report-on-bulgaria-s-music-industry-presented-in-sofia\">BTA reported<\/a> the headline: total rights revenue tripled from EUR 9.2 million in 2018 to EUR 25.6 million in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown matters more than the total. From the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosystem.bamp-bg.org\/en\/\">published report data<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Producers&#8217; direct revenue rose from EUR 2.2 million to EUR 12 million, now 47% of the whole market.<\/li>\n<li>Digital revenue to producers went from EUR 1.3 million to EUR 10 million, a 600% rise.<\/li>\n<li>PROPHON, the neighbouring rights society, collected EUR 4.7 million in 2024. CMO means collective management organisation, the body that licenses broadcast and public performance on behalf of rightsholders.<\/li>\n<li>Musicautor, the authors&#8217; and publishers&#8217; CMO, collected EUR 8.9 million, of which EUR 4.2 million came from broadcasting alone.<\/li>\n<li>Musicautor&#8217;s digital income grew tenfold, from EUR 105,000 to EUR 1.2 million, off a very small base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then in March 2026, BAMP put 2025 recorded music revenue at USD 21.7 million, up 13.2%, roughly twice the global growth rate. Paid streaming grew 22% and generated more than 40% of industry revenue, vinyl rose 23.5%, and PROPHON collections grew 12.6%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Revenue from paid streaming services is the main driver of the market in the country in 2025,&#8221; BAMP executive director Boral Shen told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bta.bg\/en\/news\/culture\/1086724-music-revenue-in-bulgaria-in-2025-exceeds-usd-20-mln-for-first-time\">BTA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The subscriber math nobody in Sofia can ignore<\/h2>\n<p>Bulgaria has about 300,000 paying subscribers and roughly 4.3 million people using YouTube for free.<\/p>\n<p>The BAMP report puts the addressable subscriber market at 3.8 million, about 57% of the population, worth an estimated EUR 42.4 million a year if it converted. Current paid penetration is around 5%.<\/p>\n<p>That gap is the whole story of Bulgarian music economics right now. A Bulgarian pop-folk record still earns most of its money through television, radio, and the Planeta ecosystem run by Payner out of Dimitrovgrad, plus live work. That revenue is real, but it arrives on a broadcast log cycle, not per stream.<\/p>\n<h3>What that means for a release plan<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Treat domestic paid streaming as marketing reach first and revenue second, at least until penetration moves.<\/li>\n<li>Broadcast and public performance money requires correct works registration at Musicautor and recording registration at PROPHON. Neither happens because you distributed a track.<\/li>\n<li>YouTube is the mass-reach platform in Bulgaria. Sound recording claiming there is a revenue line, not a nice-to-have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The gap the report names out loud<\/h2>\n<p>Sillamaa&#8217;s study lists three weaknesses in the ecosystem: digital piracy, thin music education, and insufficient focus on music exports.<\/p>\n<p>Export is the one a distributor can act on today. The Bulgarian artists who do earn meaningful streaming money earn most of it abroad. <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcharts.com\/en\/artists\/spotify-monthly-listeners\/country\/bulgaria\">Soundcharts<\/a> figures put Azis at roughly 741,000 Spotify monthly listeners and Krisko at around 246,000, audiences a 300,000-subscriber home market cannot generate by itself.<\/p>\n<p>That listenership is Balkan, Turkish, and diaspora: Germany, Spain, the UK, and the neighbouring markets where Planeta TV already travels.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the distribution choice matters here<\/h2>\n<p>Bulgaria runs two payment clocks. The rights rail pays through Musicautor and PROPHON on collection and distribution schedules. The recording rail pays through DSPs, where DSP means digital service provider, and lands wherever your distributor routes it.<\/p>\n<p>For a Sofia label, the practical questions are unglamorous. Does your delivery carry clean DDEX metadata, so a Bulgarian recording is identified correctly in Germany and Turkey? DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the messaging standard DSPs use to ingest releases. Can you see territory-level reporting that shows whether the money is coming from Berlin rather than Burgas?
