The Nigeria International Gospel Music Awards returned to Lagos for its fifth edition on Sunday, August 9, at the Agip Recital Hall inside the MUSON Centre in Onikan, with the Academy of Gospel Music in Nigeria pulling together the widest nominee list the ceremony has run in its five-year history. Moses Bliss, Mercy Chinwo, Lawrence Oyor and Gaise Baba lead the Artiste of the Year category, and the awards are pairing the show with a nationwide mental health awareness campaign, a first for NIGMA.<\/p>\n
It is a small ceremony next to the Grammys chatter that dominates most Nigerian music coverage in August, but NIGMA sits on top of a gospel economy that keeps generating real numbers in Nigeria even when it gets a fraction of the trade press Afrobeats gets.<\/p>\n
Artiste of the Year is a four-way field: Moses Bliss, Lawrence Oyor, Mercy Chinwo and Gaise Baba. Album of the Year pits Moses Bliss’s “The Expression” against Mercy Chinwo’s “In His Will,” Frank Edwards’s “Heart of Worship” and Sunmisola Agbebi’s “Glory.” Song of the Year nominees include entries from Gaise Baba, Sounds of Salem, EmmaOMG and Lawrence Oyor.<\/p>\n
The Male and Female Vocalist categories double as a snapshot of who is actually working right now: Peterson Okopi, Neon Adejo, Moses Bliss and Kaestrings on the men’s side; Mercy Chinwo, Onos Ariyo, Judikay and Sunmisola Agbebi on the women’s. NIGMA’s Next Rated Artiste category, reserved for newer names, nominates TKeyz, Khael, Mera Owili, Uchenna Okereke and BBO, which is as good a shortlist as any for who to watch in Nigerian gospel over the next year.<\/p>\n
NIGMA also runs a Diaspora Artiste of the Year split by gender, a category most secular Nigerian award shows don’t bother with, nominating Enkay, Purist Ogboi, Tosin Oyelakin and Ada Ehi on the female side, and Limoblaze, Gabriel Eziashi, Evans Ogboi and Lawrence DeCovenant on the male side. Limoblaze in particular has built a real US gospel-hop following outside Nigeria’s borders, and his inclusion here is a reminder that “Nigerian gospel” is not a domestic-only category anymore.<\/p>\n
Group and choir honors go to a field of Mr. M & Revelation, Tim Godfrey & Fearless Community, The City Choir and 121 Selah, and the ceremony is handing out Legacy Awards to Buchi Atuonwu, Lara George, Segun Obe and the late Sammie Okposo, alongside Lifetime Achievement recognition for Evang. Dr. Bola Are and Pastor Kunle Ajayi.<\/p>\n
The organizers are using the 2026 edition to launch what they’re calling a nationwide mental health awareness initiative, built around church-based pre-event programming, tertiary institution outreach, keynote sessions and counseling partnerships. NIGMA’s Project Public Relations Consultant, Nsikak Daniels, framed the ceremony itself around that shift: “NIGMA has evolved into a platform that transcends the glamour, sights, and sounds typically associated with award ceremonies.”<\/p>\n
Kingsley Omoefe, the Academy’s founder and team lead, put it more plainly: “NIGMA is not a competition but a celebration of excellence, creativity, consistency, and positive impact in gospel music.” Project Director Victor Igbinigie added that the show is meant as “a celebration of purpose, excellence, and the transformative power of gospel music.”<\/p>\n
Whether or not you buy the framing that an awards show is also a mental health platform, tying the ceremony to a wellness campaign fits a pattern in Nigerian gospel circles, where church networks function as both a distribution channel and a community-support structure in ways secular Afrobeats promotion generally doesn’t touch.<\/p>\n
Most outside coverage of Nigerian music runs through Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Rema and the Mavin\/YBNL axis, for good reason: that’s where the global streaming numbers and the Grammy nominations are. But gospel is a genuinely separate commercial lane inside Nigeria, with its own charts, its own church-network distribution, and artists like Moses Bliss and Mercy Chinwo who move real streaming and merchandise volume without ever needing a crossover single to a secular audience.<\/p>\n
That lane rarely gets covered by the outlets parachuting into “Afrobeats is having a moment” pieces, because it doesn’t fit the export narrative. NIGMA’s nominee list this year is a useful corrective: Limoblaze building a diaspora gospel-hop audience, Tim Godfrey running an established choir brand, Sammie Okposo’s Legacy Award nomination arriving after his death last year. These are working careers with real audiences, not a footnote to the Afrobeats conversation.<\/p>\n
Gospel artists in Nigeria have historically been underserved by mainstream DSP promotional muscle relative to their actual listener numbers, partly because church and event-circuit distribution built parallel revenue streams that didn’t depend on playlist placement the way secular pop does. As that changes, and gospel catalogs increasingly need the same metadata discipline, royalty splits and global DSP delivery that any other genre needs to actually get paid on Spotify, Apple Music and Boomplay, the artists winning categories like this one are as much a distribution story as a chart story. Whoever wins Artiste of the Year on Sunday night has a catalog that needs the same rights-management rigor a Grammy-nominated Afrobeats catalog does. The infrastructure conversation just doesn’t happen in the same rooms yet.<\/p>\n
NIGMA’s fifth edition is small next to the scale of Nigeria’s mainstream pop export machine.
