In the U.S., Giday co-founded a studio and creative space, worked with artists who later secured record deals, and saw one act signed under <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/5K4W6rqBFWDnAN6FQUkSx9\">Kanye West<\/a>. But moving back to Addis Ababa meant starting over.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first moved back, I had to really humble myself. Nobody cares,\u201d Giday says. \u201cWhatever you\u2019ve done up there, you have to come here and prove yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began producing and connecting with the local scene, even joining a band that played weekly hotel gigs for far less than he earned in the States. \u201cI used to send money back from the States, and now I\u2019m here playing for that,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI had to come here and start from zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A Reintroduction Through \u2018Original\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The album, which Giday calls both a reintroduction and his origin story, draws on roughly 40 to 50 songs he considered before narrowing the tracklist to 16. He cut material that felt dated or no longer reflected his perspective. \u201cI wanted to finish telling the story,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The project features Ethiopian artists <strong>Yohana<\/strong>, <strong>Sami Dan<\/strong>, <strong>Dibekulu<\/strong>, <strong>Adey<\/strong>, and <strong>Skat Nati<\/strong>, as well as Malawian rapper <strong>Sagonjah<\/strong>, who appears on the opening track \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Griot\">Griot<\/a>.\u201d Giday says the title and collaboration were deliberate: \u201cI wanted people to be like, \u2018What is the griot? What is that?\u2019 and search and look it up, and then understand that I\u2019m a storyteller.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A Changing Scene<\/h2>\n<p>Giday returned to an Ethiopian music industry that he says has since undergone a renaissance. When he released \u201cOriginal,\u201d he notes, <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/llona-drops-on-the-road-album-forged-by-a-25-city-nigerian-tour\/\">five other albums dropped around the same time<\/a>, a level of activity he had never seen before. Younger artists are collaborating more freely, experimenting with new sounds and local instruments, and visual production has grown alongside the music. The video for his lead single \u201cThis Kind Love,\u201d directed by <strong>Maranata Tegegne<\/strong>, reflects that increasingly ambitious creative ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h2>Global Ambitions<\/h2>\n<p>Having spent much of his life moving between Ethiopia and the U.S., Giday believes he can make music that resonates at home while remaining accessible abroad. \u201cI\u2019m trying to represent Ethiopia but on a global stage. I don\u2019t think anybody\u2019s really done that yet,\u201d he says. \u201cI think that\u2019s my place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His Afrofusion sound blends Ethiopian languages and influences with English and the global genres that shaped him, including reggae, R&amp;B, and <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/davidos-oriade-opens-with-30-83-million-global-spotify-streams\/\">West African music<\/a> he heard growing up. He credits reggae and conscious music with helping him through a difficult period after he first arrived in Boston at 17 to study civil engineering at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastern.edu\/\">Northeastern University<\/a>. He later enrolled at the <strong>New England School of Art<\/strong>, where he studied digital audio and media production, and co-founded a studio and clothing space that became a hub for young artists.<\/p>\n<h2>Staying True<\/h2>\n<p>Giday describes \u201cOriginal\u201d as a commitment to authenticity. The album closes with \u201cAbqitwal,\u201d which he translates as \u201cit\u2019s done\u201d or \u201cit\u2019s over,\u201d a track he says captures a sense of finality and new beginnings. \u201cI don\u2019t mind restarting again,\u201d he adds. \u201cI\u2019m also introducing myself to me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ethiopian artist Giday has released his album
