{"id":16721,"date":"2026-08-11T19:47:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T19:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/eri-ife-releases-rubicon-ep-shares-journey-of-faith-and-sound\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T01:08:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T01:08:16","slug":"eri-ife-releases-rubicon-ep-shares-journey-of-faith-and-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/eri-ife-releases-rubicon-ep-shares-journey-of-faith-and-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"Eri Ife Releases \u2018Rubicon\u2019 EP, Shares Journey of Faith and Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigerian singer-songwriter <strong>Eri Ife<\/strong>, also known as \u201cEsquire Wey Dey Run Choir,\u201d has returned with a new EP titled <strong>Rubicon<\/strong>, a project that furthers his exploration of soul, alternative, and R&amp;B while placing his spirituality at the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>The artist, who describes himself as a \u201csonic chameleon,\u201d spoke about the experiences and convictions that shaped the record, from his early musical memories to his dual career as an entertainment lawyer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Early musical roots and a name change<\/h2>\n<p>Eri Ife\u2019s connection to music predates his time in the church choir. He recalled a formative moment at age five, hearing a song so moving it \u201cbroke my heart.\u201d He suspects it was either an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enya.com\">Enya<\/a> track or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.didomusic.com\">Dido<\/a>\u2019s \u201cLife for Rent.\u201d Growing up, he also absorbed the sounds of <strong>Lagbaja<\/strong> and <strong>Yinka Ayefele<\/strong> before discovering mainstream Afrobeats in secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>Before adopting his birth name, he performed as a rapper under the stage name Calderon. \u201cI had a cousin who was nicknamed that and my 17-year-old brain thought it was the coolest name ever,\u201d he said. The shift came when he picked up the guitar and began writing more vulnerable, honest songs. \u201cThe entire vibe of what I created changed, and I knew the name had to change with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Faith, heritage, and a musical redirection<\/h2>\n<p>Although he was raised in the UK, Eri Ife\u2019s Nigerian identity is unmistakable in his music, from the production to lyrics that weave in Yoruba. \u201cMy heritage forms a critical part of my identity,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019m a Yoruba boy who had the privilege of growing up middle class. I may speak grammar from time to time but ibile ni mi.\u201d He added that being multilingual allows him to access a depth of expression that English alone might not satisfy.<\/p>\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/nigma-2026-moses-bliss-mercy-chinwo-lawrence-oyor-nominees-lagos\/\">Christian faith<\/a>, he said, is now central to his work, though that was not always the case. Until about 2021, he was a secular artist and had begun to explore edgier themes. \u201cMy re-direction is because I\u2019ve been asked to do this. The Eri Ife you see today is just a guy trying to follow his Father\u2019s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Influences and current inspirations<\/h2>\n<p>As a rapper, he drew heavily from <strong>BOB<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcole.com\">J. Cole<\/a>, and <strong>Jon Bellion<\/strong>. \u201cA Cole verse or a Jon Bellion verse would be a dream if they ever wanted to write Christian music,\u201d he said.
