A framework called the Input Persona<\/strong> is gaining attention as a tool for musicians and creators seeking to convert the endless stream of content into lasting artistic vocabulary. Developed by educator and composer Ian Temple<\/strong>, the concept encourages artists to identify a personal learning archetype that guides how they absorb and retain musical influences.<\/p>\n

The Content Deluge and Its Limits<\/h2>\n

Many artists report that their challenge is not a lack of exposure to music, but an overwhelming surplus. It is common for listeners to spend eight hours a day with music playing yet be unable to name a single artist they heard. Even those who curate their intake carefully describe the experience as drinking from a firehose, with very little information sticking.<\/p>\n

Temple observed this pattern in conversations with musicians in his accountability group. The core issue, he noted, is not the volume of listening but the absence of active engagement. The question becomes how to feed a creative practice without drowning in the deluge.<\/p>\n

The Professional\u2019s Relationship with Influence<\/h2>\n

During a lyric-writing course with pop artist Betty Who<\/strong><\/a>, Temple saw a contrasting approach. She could effortlessly recall lyrics and reference multiple examples for every concept discussed, drawing on a memorized catalog of hundreds of songs. This depth of internalized material, Temple said, is one of the most significant divides between working professionals and aspiring creators.<\/p>\n

Pianist Kiefer<\/strong><\/a> reinforces the point with a direct question he poses to students who ask how to sound like Herbie Hancock or Robert Glasper. \u201cHow many Herbie songs have you learned? How many Glasper pieces do you know how to play?\u201d The answer, he finds, is almost always none. The simplest path, he suggests, is often the one most overlooked.<\/p>\n

A Framework for Intentional Input<\/h2>\n

To address this gap, Temple developed the Input Persona concept. The idea is to define a character based on one\u2019s natural strengths that shapes how learning happens. Rather than trying to absorb everything, an artist leans into a specific mode of deep engagement.<\/p>\n

He points to Questlove<\/strong><\/a> of The Roots as an example of an Archivist<\/strong>. Questlove\u2019s encyclopedic knowledge of recorded soul, funk, and live rarities, demonstrated in DJ sets, film projects, and on-the-spot covers, reflects a systematic, preservation-oriented mind. Temple describes his own style as that of an Educator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I love to do and what I\u2019m good at is going absurdly deep on something specific in service of sharing it with someone else,\u201d Temple said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He cited a recent project on Chopin\u2019s Raindrops Prelude that led him to read three biographies, watch a dozen videos, listen to multiple podcast episodes, and produce a 30-minute audio piece on the work. The process felt natural and immersive once he recognized his input archetype.<\/p>\n

By identifying whether they operate as an Archivist, an Educator, or another persona, artists can stop fighting the flood and start building a durable creative foundation from the music they already
