Its Last Payout Was 27,000 Francs an Artist."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cameroon&#8217;s music royalty system just opened a new revenue line, and it runs through the beverage trade rather than the broadcast schedule.<\/p>\n<h2>A levy on beer crates, collected before the beer reaches the bar<\/h2>\n<p>On 30 July 2026, SONACAM board chair Dr. Ateh Ndong Francis announced the recovery of 100 million FCFA in copyright royalties collected at source, at a rate of 12 FCFA per crate of beer sold through domestic wholesale distribution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cameroon-tribune.cm\/article.html\/79271\/fr.html\/copyrights-windfall-sonacam-secures-landmark-100-million-fcfa\">Cameroon Tribune reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CFA franc is pegged to the euro at 655.957, so 100 million FCFA is roughly 152,000 euros.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collection happens at the wholesale level, before crates ever reach a bar or lounge.<\/li>\n<li>Boissons du Cameroun (SABC) laid the operational groundwork; Groupe DOVV facilitated collection from wholesale bonuses.<\/li>\n<li>Non-compliant bar operators were warned of sealed premises or seized funds.<\/li>\n<li>SONACAM framed the payout timing around school fees, promising distribution &#8220;in the weeks ahead.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the first time public-performance money has been captured from Cameroon&#8217;s bar economy at source. That is a genuine structural win. It is also a reminder of how thin the pipe was before.<\/p>\n<h2>What the pipe was carrying before<\/h2>\n<p>A CMO, or collective management organisation, licenses public uses of music such as radio, television, bars and concerts, then distributes what it collects to registered writers, performers and publishers. SONACAM has held that mandate in Cameroon since its 2017 general assembly in Yaounde.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2025, SONACAM issued a flat advance of 27,000 FCFA per artist out of a 40 million FCFA envelope, signed by director general Kabelok Ariane, <a href=\"https:\/\/mimimefoinfos.com\/la-sonacam-indigne-les-artistes-camerounais-avec-27-000-fcfa-davance-de-droits-dauteur\/\">Mimi Mefo Info reported<\/a>. That is about 41 euros, paid at a flat rate rather than in proportion to actual use.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet quoted a Yaounde musician calling it &#8220;not an advance, it&#8217;s charity,&#8221; and a Douala musician asking how an artist is supposed to live decently on the sum.<\/p>\n<p>The lag is the other half of the problem. In August 2022, four collective bodies distributed 340,068,245 FCFA, roughly 518,000 euros, to 685 artists, producers and publishers, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecomatin.net\/droits-dauteur-plus-de-340-millions-de-f-distribue-aux-artistes-et-editeurs-de-musique-membres-des-ex-socam-et-cmc\">EcoMatin reported<\/a>. The money covered works exploited between 2005 and 2009. Individual allocations ran from 5 million FCFA at the top to under 5,000 FCFA at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>That is a 13 to 17 year gap between the use of a song and the payment for it.<\/p>\n<h2>Meanwhile the recording rail paid on schedule<\/h2>\n<p>Libianca grew up in Bamenda. Her single &#8220;People&#8221; reached No. 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart, the highest peak an African single has ever hit there, as she discussed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officialcharts.com\/chart-news\/libianca-talks-peoples-uk-success-collaborating-with-dave-and-j-hus-and-more__38642\/\">Official Charts interview<\/a>. It was released through 5K Records with Sony Music UK and RCA, a deal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicweek.com\/labels\/read\/people-power-5k-records-builds-a-home-for-exceptional-talent-after-libianca-success\/087773\">Music Week<\/a> profiled in detail.<\/p>\n<p>None of that money moved through a Cameroonian society. Recording revenue travels a different rail: ISRC-tagged, DDEX-delivered, reported per territory per platform. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the messaging standard streaming services use to receive releases and return usage reports.<\/p>\n<h2>What a Cameroonian artist should actually do in 2026<\/h2>\n<p>The addressable audience is real but partial. <a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-cameroon\">DataReportal&#8217;s Digital 2026<\/a> puts Cameroon at 12.6 million internet users at the end of 2025, or 41.9 percent penetration, against 29.0 million mobile connections.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Register with SONACAM regardless. Beer-crate money only reaches registered members, and public performance is a separate right from streaming income, not a substitute for it.<\/li>\n<li>Keep recording rights on a rail that reports monthly. Boomplay, Audiomack, YouTube and Apple Music all pay against usage files, not envelopes.<\/li>\n<li>Fix metadata at delivery. Flat-rate distributions happen partly because nobody logged what was played.<\/li>\n<li>Assume the domestic pool stays thin and the diaspora pool does not. France, the UK and the US are where Cameroonian catalogue monetises hardest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The pattern holds across the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/senegal-paid-82-million-fcfa-march-most-was-ringback-tones-from-2024\/\">Senegal&#8217;s March payout was mostly ringback tones from 2024<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/cote-divoire-copyright-payout-shrank-june-biggest-rapper-second-city-lagos\/\">Cote d&#8217;Ivoire&#8217;s copyright distribution shrank in June<\/a>. Further south, <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/zimbabwe-paid-musicians-three-dollars-royalties-most-streamed-artist-label-offshore\/\">Zimbabwe paid some members three dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The beer levy is worth applauding. It is a collection mechanism, not a distribution system.
