Its Biggest Artist Spent His Career in Honolulu."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fiji Performing Rights Association pushed its 2026 music awards from 23 May to 5 September, citing economic pressure, three months after marking 34 years of licensing music in a country of 934,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>That scheduling note is the Fijian music economy in miniature: a functioning collecting society, a real awards show, and almost no domestic streaming revenue to defend.<\/p>\n<h2>What FIPRA actually does<\/h2>\n<p>FIPRA is Fiji&#8217;s CMO. CMO means collective management organisation, the body that licenses music on behalf of songwriters and publishers, then distributes what it collects.<\/p>\n<p>It licenses performance, broadcast, streaming, downloads, public spaces, film and television, and pays members annually. It is working through a published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fipra.com.fj\/\">Strategic Plan 2025-2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 timeline on FIPRA&#8217;s own media page is the useful part:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>13 May 2026:<\/strong> the awards move to 5 September. The board cited &#8220;the present economic pressures,&#8221; per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fijivillage.com\/news\/2026-fipra-music-awards-rescheduled-to-september-2e3fe4\/\">Fijivillage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>23 June 2026:<\/strong> a 34-year anniversary post.<\/li>\n<li><strong>23 July 2026:<\/strong> two internal licensing promotions, Gabirieli Waqavanua and Waisea Delana.<\/li>\n<li><strong>29 July 2026:<\/strong> the chief financial officer of APRA AMCOS runs financial management training for FIPRA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An Australasian society flying its CFO in to train a Pacific society&#8217;s finance function tells you where the capacity gap sits. It is collection and administration, not repertoire.<\/p>\n<h2>The nominee list is the domestic market<\/h2>\n<p>The 2026 FIPRAMAs shortlist ran across ten categories including Best Itaukei Song, Best Sigidrigi Song, Best Gospel Song and Best Hip Hop Song, with nominees including Liz Vamarasi, Paradise Rootz, Kuki, InsideOut and Radike, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbcnews.com.fj\/entertainment\/2026-fipra-music-award-nominees\/\">per FBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That is the actual repertoire. Sigidrigi and iTaukei-language song are the mainstream in Fiji, and close to invisible in global playlist taxonomy.<\/p>\n<h2>The export ran through Honolulu<\/h2>\n<p>Fiji&#8217;s biggest musical export was George &#8220;Fiji&#8221; Veikoso, who died on 23 July 2025 aged 55. He was born in Tailevu in 1970, relocated to Hawaii in 1987, and built a catalogue of more than 12 albums that had passed 500 million streams by 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fijitimes.com.fj\/george-fiji-veikoso-passes-away-aged-55\/\">according to The Fiji Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He took two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1998, co-wrote a Baywatch Hawaii theme, and mentored J Boog, Common Kings and Maoli, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicradio.org\/local-news\/2025-07-30\/soundtrack-of-our-lives-fijis-music-legacy-continues-for-generations-to-come\">Hawai&#8217;i Public Radio<\/a> documented after his death.<\/p>\n<p>That catalogue was made, released and monetised inside the Hawaii and US mainland industry. None of it was ever a Suva licensing problem.<\/p>\n<p>What stays local is smaller by orders of magnitude. A 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fijitimes.com.fj\/royalties-for-fijian-musos\/\">Fiji Times<\/a> report on FIPRA&#8217;s distribution put roughly FJ$200,000 in the pool for members, including 26,542.29 from the Japanese Defence Force and 8,516.20 from the US Pacific Fleet for music use.<\/p>\n<h2>Connectivity is not the constraint<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-fiji\">DataReportal&#8217;s Digital 2026 Fiji report<\/a> counts 741,000 internet users at 79.3% penetration and 569,000 social media identities against a population of 934,000.<\/p>\n<p>Scale is the constraint. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicmetricsvault.com\/countries\/fiji\/72\">Music Metrics Vault&#8217;s Spotify tracking<\/a> for Fiji-based artists puts the top act, Black Rose, under 60,000 monthly listeners. The next names sit in the low thousands.<\/p>\n<h2>What a Fijian release should do in 2026<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Register with FIPRA anyway.<\/strong> It is the only route to hotel, radio and venue money at home, and its reciprocal agreements are how foreign performance income finds you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treat the society and the distributor as separate jobs.<\/strong> A FIPRA licence does not deliver your recording to Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim at the diaspora, not the domestic chart.<\/strong> Auckland, Sydney, Honolulu and California are where Pacific reggae and iTaukei catalogue actually get paid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix the language metadata before delivery.<\/strong> iTaukei and Fiji Hindi titles get mangled in transit, and mangled metadata means unmatched royalties.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Document splits at release,<\/strong> not after an award night.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fiji&#8217;s problem is not the absence of a society. It is that the society licenses a 934,000-person base while the audience that pays is spread across four countries, the same structural split we covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/papua-new-guinea-2-6-million-internet-users-no-music-royalty-society-biggest-hit-signed-london\/\">Papua New Guinea<\/a> and, from the other direction, in <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/new-zealand-music-best-streaming-quarter-four-years-local-artists-9-percent\/\">New Zealand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DDEX, which stands for Digital Data Exchange, is the messaging standard distributors use to send release metadata to streaming services. Getting a Sigidrigi title through it intact is most of the battle, which is why InterSpace Distribution delivers DDEX-native.
