Acts including <strong>Post Malone<\/strong>, <strong>ZAYN<\/strong>, <strong>Meghan Trainor<\/strong>, and the <strong>Pussycat Dolls<\/strong> have canceled all or part of major tours, and streaming data points to a gap between monthly listener counts and actual ticket demand.<\/p>\n<p>None of the artists said ticket sales were the reason. Post Malone, whose real name is Austin Post, said he needed to finish a new album. Trainor cited her new baby. Still, three factors surrounding these tours suggest ticket sales could be the culprit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ticket prices are rising while many fans face cost-of-living pressure.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/three-quarters-of-british-artists-spotify-money-comes-from-abroad-the-uk-share-of-global-streams-is-shrinking\/\">Streaming data<\/a> shows large audiences for older songs rather than current material.<\/li>\n<li>A crowded touring market is diluting demand for individual shows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Streaming reach vs. ticket demand<\/h2>\n<p>The artists\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\"><strong>Spotify<\/strong><\/a> monthly listeners range from 16.5 million to 60.6 million, with the Pussycat Dolls at the low end and Post Malone at the high end. Post Malone regularly sits within the top 50 on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify counts a monthly listener whether someone plays Post Malone\u2019s latest album, <em>F-1 Trillion: Long Bed<\/em> (2024), on repeat or simply lets \u201cSunflower\u201d (2019) pass as part of a workout playlist. Only one of those listeners is likely to spend the minimum $57, plus drinks and transportation, to see him perform at a stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at where these artists get their Spotify listeners, all of them see the majority go to songs released in a previous era. Post Malone\u2019s daily change in Spotify streams over the past year shows that \u201crockstar\u201d (2017), \u201cCircles\u201d (2019), and \u201cCongratulations\u201d (2016) consistently receive the highest numbers compared to newer songs in his recent live setlists, which can be found on Setlist.FM.<\/p>\n<p>The most conspicuous example is ZAYN, whose real name is Zayn Malik. He has almost 26 million monthly listeners, but three songs dominate total streams: \u201cPILLOWTALK\u201d with 1.8 billion, his Taylor Swift collaboration \u201cI Don\u2019t Wanna Live Forever\u201d with 2.2 billion, and his Sia collaboration \u201cDusk Till Dawn\u201d with 2.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p>All three songs were released between 2016 and 2018, and the only one he has been performing lately is \u201cPILLOWTALK.\u201d His daily change in Spotify streams shows that these three songs get at least 600,000 more plays every day than the next most popular song, which usually gets around 50,000.<\/p>\n<p>These stats create a feedback loop in playlisting. ZAYN\u2019s top three songs are in almost 10 times as many playlists as the rest of his catalog. None of Post Malone\u2019s top ten songs in terms of playlist adds are from this decade. If certain songs always get the most plays, the algorithm places them in more playlists while <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/why-are-we-still-managing-modern-releases-like-its-2005\/\">leaving newer songs behind<\/a>. If the vast majority of listeners only care about a few older songs, they may have little reason to spend money on a concert.<\/p>\n<h2>Rethinking touring strategies<\/h2>\n<p>Touring is how artists earn the bulk of their income, and most people listen on streaming. If streaming leads to fair-weather fans by nature, artists may have to reconsider their approach to touring. They could book smaller spaces to bank on exclusivity and maintain their reputation, or double down on fan engagement to bring more people into their camp.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luminatedata.com\"><strong>Luminate<\/strong><\/a> study found that Gen Z audiences are willing to spend money despite rising costs. Many in that generation were too young for these artists\u2019 most popular songs, but if artists can find a way to get more of them interested, their touring careers can be healthy long into the future.<\/p>\n<p>This prospect goes beyond the music. As the Pussycat Dolls demonstrated, collaborating with a currently popular artist does not necessarily do the trick. They tapped <strong>Sara Landry<\/strong>, one of the most popular DJs in the world at the moment, to remix their new single \u201cClub Songs,\u201d and it does not even have 180,000 streams yet.<\/p>\n<p>Luminate\u2019s findings back up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livenation.com\"><strong>Live Nation<\/strong><\/a> study that found Gen Z places great emphasis on in-person events. Artists are already addressing this dynamic. Artists of all genres and levels of fame are hosting pop-up sets in unconventional locations to provide fans with more intimate, memorable shows. Other artists are investing in <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/beyond-the-banger-why-musics-real-power-move-is-infrastructure\/\">intricate activations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia Rodrigo<\/strong> curated two simultaneously running immersive activations in Los Angeles ahead of her third album, <em>you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love<\/em> (2026). She also personally hosted a listening event. Now her entire world tour and her new festival, <strong>Daisy Chain Fields<\/strong>, are sold out.<\/p>\n<p>When mainstage DJ and producer <strong>Kaskade<\/strong> hosted a pop-up merch shop for his latest album, <em>undux<\/em> (2025), he personally greeted fans at the door. For <strong>Elise Milani<\/strong>, Director of Operations &amp; Marketing at BLK Matter Ltd and part of Kaskade\u2019s management team, the lesson is simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHow are you
