The recorded side of the business is a far newer, thinner pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer swept both categories at the revived Banks Party Monarch Finals on 14 July, taking Sweet Soca with &#8220;Real Feters&#8221; and Power Soca with &#8220;Like Ah Bajan&#8221; on perfect 100-point scores, <a href=\"https:\/\/barbadostoday.bb\/2026\/07\/14\/mikey-mercer-sweeps-both-soca-monarch-titles-at-revived-finals\/\">per Barbados Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The prize money is the market<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Champion in each category: BDS$100,000. Runner-up BDS$50,000, third BDS$40,000, fourth BDS$20,000.<\/li>\n<li>Mercer also won both titles the last time the competition ran, in 2019, for BDS$20,000 and a truck, <a href=\"https:\/\/socanews.com\/news\/soca-monarch-returns-to-crop-over-for-2026\/\">according to Soca News<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is a five-fold rise in the top prize in seven years. Culture minister Senator Shane Archer announced the revival in the Senate during the 2026 Appropriation Bill debate, after the format was scrapped in 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>The audience is in a field, not a feed<\/h2>\n<p>Archer&#8217;s attendance tally for the 2026 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/barbadostoday.bb\/2026\/08\/17\/crop-over-promotion-planning-to-be-reviewed\/\">reported by Barbados Today on 17 August<\/a>, adds to roughly 54,000 admissions across seven flagship events, from 4,500 at Junior Monarch and 7,500 at Party Monarch to 10,000 at Grand Kadooment and 12,500 at Pandemonium.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that with the digital base. Barbados has a population of 283,000, with 226,000 internet users at 80.0 percent penetration and 193,000 social media identities, <a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-barbados\">per DataReportal&#8217;s Digital 2026 country report<\/a> published 8 November 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A domestic streaming market that size will never pay a soca career. The export audience will, and it sits in London, Toronto, New York and Miami.<\/p>\n<h2>The rights plumbing is only two years old<\/h2>\n<p>A CMO, or collective management organisation, licenses music on behalf of writers, performers and labels and then distributes the money. Barbados has one: COSCAP, founded in 1997. Its cross-border wiring is recent.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>January 2024: COSCAP struck a deal with Canada&#8217;s CMRRA and SX Works Global Publisher Services to collect mechanical royalties in Canada and, via The MLC, online mechanicals in the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/canadas-cmrra-and-sx-works-global-publisher-services-strike-partnership-with-barbados-coscap\/\">reported by Music Business Worldwide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>February 2026: SoundExchange named COSCAP among seven new rights-owner agreements in a batch of 17, taking its portfolio past 90 deals and 91 percent of the global neighbouring rights market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundexchange.com\/news\/soundexchange-expands-international-cmo-agreements\/\">per SoundExchange<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Neighbouring rights are the royalties owed to performers and master owners when a recording is broadcast or publicly performed, separate from songwriter royalties. For a Barbadian performer, that revenue line effectively did not reach the United States until this year.<\/p>\n<h2>The paperwork gap is the real leak<\/h2>\n<p>COSCAP chief executive Dr Erica Smith has flagged the same problem twice in two years: money is lost before it can be claimed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>September 2025: Smith warned of &#8220;a limited use of written agreements or poorly written agreements&#8221; across the creative sector, telling Barbados Today that copyright ownership <a href=\"https:\/\/barbadostoday.bb\/2025\/09\/06\/working-without-contracts-costing-artists-warns-coscap\/\">should be evidenced in writing<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>September 2024: Smith told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.bb\/news\/local-news\/coscap-promoters-not-paying-up\/\">Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation<\/a> it was &#8220;a challenge receiving payments from show promoters.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The festival&#8217;s economic impact is measured. The recorded-music export is not. The Central Bank of Barbados <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralbank.org.bb\/news\/everyday-economics\/exporting-vibes-building-barbados-creative-economy\">cited a Sir Arthur Lewis Institute study<\/a> putting Crop Over&#8217;s direct and indirect impact at BDS$78 million in 2007, up from BDS$55 million in 2001. No comparable figure exists for what Barbadian catalogue earns abroad.<\/p>\n<h2>What a Bajan act should fix before next season<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Document writer and producer splits in writing before the song is mixed, not after it charts.<\/li>\n<li>Register with COSCAP on both the writer and rights-owner sides so the CMRRA, MLC and SoundExchange pipes actually have a claimant attached.<\/li>\n<li>Release the Crop Over song in April, not July. The competition calendar is not the streaming calendar.<\/li>\n<li>Deliver to the markets the diaspora lives in, with correct ISRCs and contributor credits so foreign societies can match the recording.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Distribution matters here mainly as metadata discipline.
