Switching distributors is the most common structural move an independent label makes, and the international standard written to make catalogue transfers safe explicitly does not cover it.<\/p>\n

DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the not-for-profit body whose message formats carry almost every commercial music delivery between rightsholders and streaming services. It publishes a Catalogue Transfer standard. Read the scope and the gap is immediate.<\/p>\n

The standard covers three parties, and none of them is a distributor<\/h2>\n

DDEX describes the Catalogue Transfer messages as covering “one specific type of catalogue transfer that occurs between just three parties,” namely a relinquishing record company, an acquiring record company and a digital service provider (DSP). The trade calls it lift and shift.<\/p>\n

The reason it exists is stated plainly on DDEX’s own standards page<\/a>: “Catalogue transfers of releases or resources regularly lead to them becoming unavailable to consumers on DSPs’ services, even if only for a short period of time. In addition, consumer-generated data such as playlists or comments are often lost alongside long-term usage information.”<\/p>\n

Then the sentence that matters for everyone reading this: “This standard in its current iteration does not seek to support catalogue transfers that involve distributors.”<\/p>\n

So the move that majors make when they buy a label is standardised. The move that a 40-release indie makes when it leaves one platform for another is not.<\/p>\n

Why the rails themselves moved in 2026<\/h2>\n

This is not theoretical this year. Universal Music Group closed its 775 million dollar acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings in February 2026, and the European Commission cleared it only on condition that Curve Royalty Systems be sold to an independent buyer.<\/p>\n

Merlin and Matt Spetzler’s Jamen Capital completed that purchase on 18 August 2026, as reported by Rafaela Fornitani at Music Business Worldwide<\/a>. Merlin chief executive Charlie Lexton called Curve “vital infrastructure for independent music businesses worldwide.”<\/p>\n

Two ownership changes in the processing layer inside seven months. Your catalogue does not have to move for your service provider to change underneath it.<\/p>\n

What actually carries, and what gets reissued<\/h2>\n

The identifier that carries your streaming history is the ISRC, the International Standard Recording Code. The US ISRC Agency<\/a> is unambiguous: each ISRC is “a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, independent of the format on which it appears (CD, download, stream etc.) or the rights owners involved.”<\/p>\n

Rights owners change. The code does not. That is the whole mechanism behind keeping stream counts, saves and playlist placements when you move.<\/p>\n

Deliver first, take down second<\/h3>\n

In LANDR’s April 2026 migration guide<\/a>, Alex Lavoie sets out the ordering most failed transfers ignore: get the release live through the new provider, wait for the DSPs to merge it against the existing recording, and only then issue the takedown. Reversing that order turns a transfer into a fresh release with zero history.<\/p>\n

Match the master, not just the spreadsheet<\/h3>\n

Lavoie is equally blunt on audio: you cannot upload a new version and expect it to link. It has to be the same file, alongside identical title, version, artist and duration.<\/p>\n
