A video tool is not the news<\/h2>\n

On August 27, InterSpace Group announced that Rotor Videos, the AI video maker LyricFind acquired in 2023, is now built into its distribution dashboards. Read as a press release, that’s a plug-in: one more feature bolted onto an upload flow.<\/p>\n

Read as a structural decision, it’s a different story. The tool didn’t attach to one brand. It attached to a layer that sits underneath 24 separate brands.<\/p>\n

That distinction is the actual news, and it says more about where distribution is heading than the video tool itself.<\/p>\n

Why visual assets stopped being optional<\/h2>\n

Spotify’s Canvas loop, the short looping visual that plays behind a track, has been quietly mandatory for serious release marketing for a couple of years now. Lyric videos are the default catalog asset labels use to keep older songs discoverable on YouTube and TikTok. Apple Music’s Album Motion does the same job inside Apple’s ecosystem.<\/p>\n

None of these formats sell records on their own. What they do is close a gap: a release without them looks unfinished next to one with them, especially in short-form feeds where a static cover image is a scroll-past.<\/p>\n

For an independent artist, that gap is a real cost. Hiring a freelance motion designer per release, coordinating file handoffs, waiting on a turnaround before a release date, that’s a workflow most self-releasing artists in Lagos, Nairobi or Manila don’t have time or budget to run for every single. It’s the same friction this desk has covered on the licensing side<\/a>: lyrics carry real value in African markets, and the infrastructure to monetize and present them properly has historically lagged the artists producing the songs.<\/p>\n

The part worth paying attention to<\/h2>\n

Most tooling partnerships a distributor announces are single-product perks: one vendor’s feature shows up inside one company’s app, for that company’s customers only. InterSpace structured this one differently. It’s live simultaneously on InterSpace Distribution, the direct-to-artist service with 15,000-plus artists and 100-plus labels, and on ToneGrid, the white-label backend that 24 partners, including TNM Small Guy Records Inc., AUMMUSE and GSG GmbH, use to run their own branded distribution platforms.<\/p>\n

That means a label running its own storefront on ToneGrid gets to hand Rotor Videos to its own roster under its own name, with no integration work on its end. The tooling shipped at the platform layer, not the brand layer, so it propagates to every business built on top of it, the same instinct behind InterSpace’s SmartLinks rollout<\/a>, marketing infrastructure shipped as a platform feature rather than a paid bolt-on.<\/p>\n

That’s a shift from “distributor as pipe to DSPs” toward “distributor as marketing platform,” a trend this desk flagged in an earlier piece<\/a> on why independent artists need an operating system rather than another standalone tool. Bundling Rotor Videos this way is InterSpace acting on that thesis, not just agreeing with it.<\/p>\n

What it looks like in practice<\/h2>\n

Lyric videos, album artwork videos, Canvas loops and Album Motion clips generate from inside the same dashboard artists already use to deliver masters and metadata. No exporting stems to a separate editing tool, no third-party vendor relationship, and artists keep full ownership of what they produce. Pricing is \u00e0 la carte, or bundled at a discount through an “Artist Unlimited Pro” subscription at $119.99 a year, which undercuts sourcing even one outside vendor across a release cycle.<\/p>\n

“Artists shouldn’t have to leave their distribution workflow to look professional online,” said Eric Okechukwu, Founder and CEO of The InterSpace Group. “Rotor Videos fits that exactly: one less vendor, one less process. And because ToneGrid partners can offer it under their own brand, this isn’t just an InterSpace advantage, it’s one our whole partner network gets to hand to their artists too.”<\/p>\n

Roy Hennig, LyricFind’s SVP of Sales, framed it from the licensing side: “The expectation for artists to show up visually across platforms has never been higher. This collaboration ensures artists have access to professional-grade video tools exactly where they need them, inside the distribution workflow they already trust.”<\/p>\n

The actual takeaway<\/h2>\n

If you’re evaluating a distributor or an aggregator, this deal gives you a real question to ask that has nothing to do with Rotor Videos specifically: is the marketing tooling bundled at the platform level, portable if you ever run your own sub-brand, or is it locked to a single vendor relationship you’d lose if you moved?
