It says \u201cthe music industry is not asking for handouts,\u201d but wants a plan that reflects that national economic contribution.<\/p>\n<p>A 2023 manifesto from the same three lead organizations sought a properly resourced, multiyear strategy and stronger routes to international success.<\/p>\n<p>The new platform asks for music to be brought into the remit of the <strong>Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment<\/strong>, recognized for its growth potential alongside screen and games, and supported by a tax rebate for businesses that develop and create music.<\/p>\n<p>Financial requests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NZ$2 million<\/strong> annually for regional touring<\/li>\n<li><strong>NZ$3 million<\/strong> for organizations delivering professional development<\/li>\n<li><strong>NZ$5 million<\/strong> for an export strategy, including expanded support through <strong>Outward Sound<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The coalition also wants music represented in trade missions.<\/p>\n<h2>Venue, education and AI proposals<\/h2>\n<p>The document calls for venue support and changes to noise and liquor-licensing rules. It also seeks at least one New Zealand support act on international shows and tours, investment in M\u0101ori-led music creation and development, and better-resourced music education.<\/p>\n<p>On artificial intelligence, the manifesto opposes new copyright exceptions for training and seeks <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/the-honesty-layer-musics-new-gatekeeping-is-disclosure-not-detection\/\">transparency about training material<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Industry voices and government precedent<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Recorded Music NZ<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jo Oliver<\/strong> described a growing market in which <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/new-zealand-music-best-streaming-quarter-four-years-local-artists-9-percent\/\">local artists still struggle to secure their share<\/a>. Country artist <strong>Kaylee Bell<\/strong> said her touring overheads had roughly doubled over three years, while travelling with a team of at least 20 New Zealanders. She credited opening for <strong>Ed Sheeran<\/strong> with transforming her career.<\/p>\n<p>The Beths\u2019 <strong>Jonathan Pearce<\/strong> put the venue problem plainly: \u201cEnterprise.\u201d A venue is somewhere to gather, certainly. It is also somewhere musicians work, technicians earn and artists learn whether an audience actually wants what they\u2019re making.<\/p>\n<p>Government investment in music is not without precedent. In June, the government highlighted support for <strong>Post Malone<\/strong>\u2019s New Zealand concert through its Events Attraction Package, pointing to the economic benefits of major performances.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition argues that if bringing international stars into New Zealand is economic development, building careers for New Zealand artists should be treated the same way.
