A recording can belong to an artist while the distribution account, login credentials, and rights-management settings remain in someone else&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<h2>Ownership vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/independent-artists-need-an-operating-system-not-another-tool\/\">operational control<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Owning a master affects who can license, monetize, transfer, and make long-term decisions about a recording. Yet an artist can own the master and still have little day-to-day control over what happens to it online.<\/p>\n<p>The distributor account may belong to a manager. The login email may belong to a freelancer. Two-factor authentication may be connected to someone else&#8217;s phone. Royalty reporting may be visible only to a third party. The artist may not have their own record of <a href=\"https:\/\/isrc.ifpi.org\/en\/\"><strong>ISRC<\/strong><\/a> (International Standard Recording Code) identifiers, <strong>UPC<\/strong> (Universal Product Code) or EAN (European Article Number) codes, original metadata, artist IDs, delivery history, or rights-management settings.<\/p>\n<p>Everything can appear normal while the business relationship is healthy. The problem becomes visible when that relationship changes. Owning a master and controlling a catalog are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<h2>Distribution accounts as operational assets<\/h2>\n<p>For many new artists, a distributor account feels like a utility: upload the master, upload the cover, enter the metadata, choose a release date, send the release to digital services, and move on. Over time, that account can hold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>release metadata<\/li>\n<li>identifiers<\/li>\n<li>payout information<\/li>\n<li>delivery history<\/li>\n<li>platform settings<\/li>\n<li>royalty statements<\/li>\n<li>ownership declarations<\/li>\n<li>rights-management options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That makes access to the distribution relationship an operational asset. If another person controls all of that <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/beyond-the-banger-why-musics-real-power-move-is-infrastructure\/\">infrastructure<\/a>, the artist may own the music but still depend on that person to operate the business around it. Professional delegation is normal, but delegation can quietly become dependency.<\/p>\n<p>Consider an independent artist at the start of a career. A friend, manager, producer, freelancer, or business partner creates the distribution account and handles the technical work. Years later, there may be dozens of releases inside the same distribution relationship. If the relationship ends, the artist needs answers to basic questions. If those answers require the cooperation of one particular person, the catalog has an operational control problem. The larger the catalog becomes, the more expensive that problem can become.<\/p>\n<h2>Identifiers and documentation<\/h2>\n<p>An <strong>ISRC<\/strong> is the international identifier used for a specific sound recording or music video recording. It serves as a fixed point of reference for a recording across services, borders, and licensing arrangements. A <strong>UPC<\/strong> or EAN is commonly used as the product-level identifier for a release. Artists do not need to become standards experts, but they should keep a reliable internal record of the identifiers attached to their catalog.<\/p>\n<p>Think of this as the catalog&#8217;s technical passport. An artist may not need every field every day, but when a migration, dispute, audit, or account handover happens, that information becomes valuable.<\/p>\n<h2>Changing distributors without losing history<\/h2>\n<p>Changing distributors is not unusual. Artists move for reasons including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pricing<\/li>\n<li>services and support<\/li>\n<li>rights-management capabilities<\/li>\n<li>label relationships<\/li>\n<li>accounting requirements<\/li>\n<li>geographic access<\/li>\n<li>changes in their business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The mistake is treating migration as simply deleting one release and uploading another. A recording that is already live has history attached to it. It may be connected to playlists, saved libraries, artist profiles, platform metadata, recommendation systems, user-generated content, and years of streaming activity.<\/p>\n<p>Before changing anything, document the existing release. Confirm the master audio, identifiers, title formatting, artist mapping, original release date, artwork, and relevant metadata. Where the old and new distributors support a coordinated migration, prepare the replacement delivery with continuity in mind and verify that it is live and correctly matched before requesting removal of the old delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Platform behavior varies, and no migration process can guarantee that every stream count, playlist connection, recommendation signal, or historical association will be preserved. The goal is to avoid unnecessary disruption by preserving the recording&#8217;s identity and coordinating the handoff carefully. Deleting first and asking questions later is one of the most avoidable risks an artist can take with an established catalog.<\/p>\n<h2>Rights management beyond streaming<\/h2>\n<p>Distribution no longer ends at streaming services. Music also appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\"><strong>YouTube<\/strong><\/a> videos, Shorts, Reels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/\"><strong>TikTok<\/strong><\/a> posts, and other forms of user-generated content. That creates another operational layer: rights management.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/film-catalogue-content-id-mcn-rights-holders\/\"><strong>YouTube Content ID<\/strong><\/a> compares uploaded videos against reference audio and video supplied by eligible copyright owners. When a match is found, the resulting claim can block, monetize, or track the matched video depending on the rights holder&#8217;s settings.<\/p>\n<p>That technology is useful when the correct party controls the reference and the underlying rights are clear. It becomes more complicated when an artist changes distribution or rights-management partners and does not know who currently administers the reference connected to the recording.
