Chocolate City spent Tuesday knocking down a rumor that had been spreading across Nigerian social media for days: that the label founded by Audu Maikori is secretly affiliated with Universal Music Group, and worse, that it is funded or controlled by a foreign intelligence agency. In a statement posted to its official X account and picked up by NotJustOk, Brand Spur NG and OloriSuperGal, Chocolate City called both claims “false and irresponsible” and said the label remains “wholly Nigerian-owned” after more than two decades in business.<\/p>\n
Neither NotJustOk’s nor Brand Spur NG’s reporting could trace the claims to a specific person, document or platform. Both describe them only as allegations “circulating online.” That matters for how this story should be read: the underlying accusation is unsourced chatter with no identified origin. What is verifiable, and what both outlets independently quoted in matching language, is Chocolate City’s own on-the-record response.<\/p>\n
The label’s statement, issued through its legal channels and shared on X, was direct. “Any suggestion that Chocolate City Music is funded, controlled or directed by any foreign intelligence agency or state actor is false and irresponsible,” the company said, according to both NotJustOk and Brand Spur NG’s reporting. Chocolate City also said it “has never had a contractual relationship or affiliation” with Universal Music Group, and that its ownership “remains entirely Nigerian.”<\/p>\n
The label leaned on its track record to make the point: more than 20 years in business, built, in its words, through “talent, hard work and legitimate commercial partnerships,” not outside control. It reserved the right to pursue further clarification if the claims persisted, and pointed followers back to its official channels for anything purporting to come from the company.<\/p>\n
Chocolate City’s roster includes Blaqbonez, Young Jonn and MI Abaga, among others, and the label has real major-label history, just not with UMG. In March 2019, Chocolate City struck a partnership with Warner Music Group, not Universal, giving it international distribution muscle while keeping its Nigerian ownership structure intact. A UMG\/WMG mix-up is a plausible, mundane explanation for at least the “affiliation” half of the rumor. It does not explain the CIA claim, which appears to be a separate and more serious escalation layered onto an old, easily-checkable fact about who Chocolate City’s actual major-label partner is.<\/p>\n
This is also not Chocolate City’s first brush with a public dispute this year. In July, the label filed a 50 million naira lawsuit against former signee Odumodublvck, a story InterSpace Daily covered at the time. It also lands at a moment when ownership structure is already a live topic in Nigerian music business conversation, from repeated scrutiny of which “independent” labels have quiet major-label money behind them, to artists publicly weighing whether a deal with an international major is a step up or a loss of control. A label going out of its way to say, on the record, “we are still 100 percent Nigerian-owned” is itself a small data point in that broader argument, whatever actually sparked the rumor this time.<\/p>\n
There is also a practical distribution angle here that gets less attention than the drama. Nigerian labels increasingly route their catalogs through a mix of direct DSP deals and third-party distributors, and an unresolved ownership question, real or invented, is exactly the kind of red flag that can slow down a distribution or licensing agreement while lawyers on the other side ask for clarity. Getting ahead of a rumor with a specific, quotable denial, rather than a vague “we don’t comment on speculation,” is the version that actually protects those conversations.<\/p>\n
Nothing here should be reported as confirmed: not the original claim, which has no identifiable source, and not Chocolate City’s side either, beyond the fact that it is what the label says. But the pattern is worth watching. As Nigerian labels get bigger and their catalogs get more valuable, expect more of this, unverified ownership claims moving faster than verified reporting can catch them. The correct response, and the one Chocolate City took here, is a fast, specific, on-the-record denial rather than silence.
