Green hydrogen powered major stages at two English festivals this August, moving the technology beyond backstage support and into main-stage production.<\/p>\n

Outdoor music festivals require large amounts of temporary electricity for sound systems, lighting rigs, video walls, catering, bars, campsites and production offices. Many sites lack a permanent grid connection. For most of live music history, diesel generators have filled that role because they are portable and dependable, but they are also noisy, polluting and hard to reconcile with the industry’s stated emissions goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Main-Stage Deployments<\/h2>\n

At Boomtown Festival<\/a><\/strong> in England this August, green-hydrogen fuel cells powered the 20,000-capacity HYDRO XL<\/strong> stage. Artists including Skrillex<\/strong>, Four Tet<\/strong>, Floating Points<\/strong> and Groove Armada<\/strong> performed there. The festival introduced a smaller hydrogen-powered stage in 2025 and expanded the experiment this year.<\/p>\n

Later that month, FORWARDS Festival<\/a><\/strong> in Bristol used green hydrogen to power its main stage, while mobile batteries charged with renewable energy handled other parts of the site. Lorde<\/strong>, Little Simz<\/strong>, Tems<\/strong> and Wet Leg<\/strong> performed across the weekend as part of a publicly supported clean-power trial intended to reduce diesel use.<\/p>\n

These were not entirely hydrogen-powered festivals, but they mark a shift from powering a backstage office or food vendor to running production infrastructure beneath major artists.<\/p>\n

How Green Hydrogen Works<\/h2>\n

Hydrogen is not automatically clean. Most hydrogen is still produced using fossil fuels. Green hydrogen is made differently: renewable electricity from wind or solar splits water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.<\/p>\n

That hydrogen can be stored, transported to a festival and fed into a fuel cell that converts it back into electricity. At the point of use, a fuel-cell generator produces water and heat rather than carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulate pollution. It is also much quieter than a diesel generator, which may be noticeable backstage even when audiences have no idea what is powering the show.<\/p>\n
