He made the remarks in an Instagram video that has since been picked up by Pulse Nigeria, QED.ng, Within Nigeria and several other outlets, and the number has been circulating across Nigerian entertainment blogs since September 17.

AY was not complaining about any single artiste by name. He was explaining, in blunt terms, why the comedy-show format he built AY Live on for more than a decade no longer works the way it used to.

What AY Actually Said

According to Pulse Nigeria’s report, AY described the shift from personal relationships to hard commercial terms:

“You could approach one artiste today, and they ask you for 200 million; another asked me for 120 million.”

He tied the jump directly to how Nigerian musicians now earn money:

“Nigerian musicians are global stars. They earn from streaming, international endorsements, and several opportunities that come in foreign currencies.”

QED.ng’s version of the same remarks adds AY’s account of who used to show up for him for far less: Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, 9ice and Portable all performed at AY Live in earlier years, back when he says the arrangement ran on “friendship, mutual support and the understanding that we were all growing together.” Both outlets quote him landing on the same conclusion: “Let comedy be enough.”

The Old Model Was Built on Exposure, Not Cash

The economics AY is describing are not new to Nigerian live entertainment, but the scale is. For years, a comedy show slot functioned as a relatively cheap way for a musician to stay visible between releases, tour dates or radio rotations. The promoter got a bigger draw at the door, the artiste got a stage and goodwill, and the fee was, in AY’s words, whatever covered “logistics.”

That trade only works if the artiste actually needs the exposure. That is the part of the market AY says has broken down.

Streaming Income Changed the Leverage

Nigeria’s streaming numbers this year help explain why. Spotify’s five-year Nigeria retrospective, published earlier in 2026, showed Afrobeats streams on the platform up more than 5,000 percent since the service launched locally in 2021, with Nigerian users logging 1.4 billion listening hours in 2025 alone. Asake, Wizkid, Seyi Vibez, Burna Boy and Davido topped the platform’s most-streamed list for the period. Apple Music’s own 2025 year-end Nigeria chart told a similar story, with Wizkid, Burna Boy, Asake, Seyi Vibez and BNXN at the top.

None of that streaming revenue by itself replaces a headline touring fee. But it does something AY’s numbers point directly at: it gives an established Nigerian artiste a baseline income and international booking market that does not depend on saying yes to every local comedy-show slot. When an artiste can headline in Paris, London or Houston, and collect royalties from Boomplay, Audiomack, Spotify and Apple Music on top of that, a Lagos comedy-show fee has to compete with real opportunity cost, not just cover a driver and a hotel room.

That is the shift AY is describing when he says musicians “no longer depend on comedy shows for visibility.” It is also, more quietly, a signal of how much leverage has moved toward artistes and their teams in the broader Nigerian live-entertainment economy, not just in music-specific bookings.

The Squeeze Below the Headline Fee

AY’s remarks also point at a cost problem promoters rarely get to air publicly. He said a single artiste’s fee can now exceed an entire show’s other production costs combined, listing venue, sound, screens, security, publicity and staff as the rest of the budget a promoter still has to cover regardless of who is on the musical bill. For a comedy-first show like AY Live, where the comedy is the actual product being sold, stacking N200 million and N120 million fees on top of standard production costs stops making arithmetic sense at any realistic ticket price.

That is the practical reason AY landed where he did: fewer or no big-name musical guests, and a pitch to audiences that the comedy itself should be the draw.

The Bigger Picture

AY’s comments will read to some as a comedian grumbling about a market moving on without him, and there is an element of that. But the underlying numbers are consistent with what the platforms themselves have been reporting all year: Nigerian artistes at the top of the market are earning meaningfully more from streaming and international work than they were even three or four years ago, and that changes what it takes to get them on a domestic stage that is not their own tour.

The uncomfortable part for Nigeria’s comedy and variety-show circuit is that this was never really about music economics. It is a live-events problem. Promoters who built their model around borrowing a musician’s draw for a few hours are now pricing against artistes whose real market is a Spotify royalty statement and a foreign tour rider, not a comedy-club stage in Lagos. AY’s answer, essentially conceding the point and building the show around comedy alone, may end up being the more honest read of where that leverage sits than any complaint about the fees themselves.

Comedian AY Makun says Nigerian musicians now demand up to N200 million for comedy-show appearances, a shift he ties directly to streaming and international income replacing exposure as artistes’ main currency.
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[5
130,46953,359,150,18164
post-20317","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-industry-trends","tag-afrobeats","tag-ay-makun","tag-live-music","tag-nigeria","tag-streaming-economics","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap

AY Makun: Nigerian Artiste Booking Fees Hit N200m

<meta name="description" content="AY Makun says booking Nigerian artistes now costs up to N200m.
