Nobody Has to Listen in Atmos for It to Count."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apple Music pays up to 10 percent more in sound-recording royalties for tracks available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, even if nobody hears the Atmos mix.<\/p>\n<p>That last clause is the whole mechanism, and it turns Atmos from a sound-quality question into a payback question.<\/p>\n<h2>How the 1.1 factor works<\/h2>\n<p>Apple told label partners on 22 January 2024 that, from that month&#8217;s royalty run, &#8220;pro-rata shares for Spatial Available plays will be calculated using a factor of 1.1 while Non-Spatial Available plays will continue to use a factor of 1,&#8221; as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/apple-music-to-pay-artists-up-to-10-higher-royalties-for-music-available-in-spatial-audio\/\">Murray Stassen reported for Music Business Worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/artists.apple.com\/support\/5477-elevate-sound-spatial-audio-dolby-atmos\">Apple Music for Artists guide<\/a> still carries the rule, and its footnote counts any play of Spatial-available content &#8220;regardless of whether the listening device supports Spatial Audio.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Availability counts, not listening.<\/strong> A play on a device that cannot render Spatial Audio still earns the weighting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It is a master-side rule.<\/strong> Apple frames it as a share of sound-recording royalties, not publishing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The pool does not grow.<\/strong> Pro-rata splits a fixed pot by share of plays, so the extra comes out of stereo-only tracks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Illustrative math: if half of a month&#8217;s plays were Spatial-available, an Atmos-ready track would land about 4.8 percent above an unweighted split and a stereo-only track about 4.8 percent below. The gap between them stays at 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Apple said in January 2024 that 80 percent of songs reaching its Global Daily Top 100 the prior year were Spatial-available.<\/p>\n<h2>What the uplift is worth per play<\/h2>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s 2021 letter to artists put its average at $0.01 per play on individual paid plans in 2020, a figure that &#8220;includes label and publisher royalties,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/apple-musics-full-letter-to-artists-on-streaming-royalties\/\">full text published by Bruce Houghton at Hypebot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if that whole cent were master income, a 10 percent edge is worth at most $0.001 per Apple Music play. Apple says the value varies by plan and country, and where it is lower, the edge shrinks with it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DistroKid<\/strong> listed $26.99 per track to add Atmos in its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.distrokid.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4403029574675-Uploading-a-Dolby-Atmos-Mix-of-Your-Music\">help centre<\/a> as of February 2026, or about 27,000 Apple Music plays to recover.<\/li>\n<li><strong>TuneCore<\/strong> listed $16.99 per track in its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.tunecore.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/10511913953812-How-Do-I-Upload-Dolby-Atmos-Audio-to-Apple-Music\">help centre<\/a> as of October 2025, or about 17,000 plays.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The mix itself<\/strong> is extra: every $100 paid to an engineer needs roughly another 100,000 plays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Three delivery rules that decide eligibility<\/h2>\n<h3>1. No upmixes<\/h3>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/help.apple.com\/itc\/videoaudioassetguide\/en.lproj\/static.html\">Video and Audio Asset Guide<\/a>, version 5.3.19 updated on 8 September 2026, requires Atmos built from multitracks or stems made from multitracks. Upmixing a stereo release, extracting stems from it, or placing a stereo mix in the sound field with added reverb are all banned.<\/p>\n<p>Non-compliant audio &#8220;may be removed from Apple Music.&#8221; A leased beat or lost session files probably rules a track out.<\/p>\n<h3>2. The file spec<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>ADM BWF means Broadcast Wave Format with Audio Definition Model metadata, the container Apple requires.<\/li>\n<li>24-bit audio at 48 or 96 kHz.<\/li>\n<li>LKFS means Loudness, K-weighted, relative to Full Scale. The ceiling is -18 LKFS integrated, with a true-peak ceiling of -1 dBTP.<\/li>\n<li>Synced to the stereo reference master.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Timing<\/h3>\n<p>Apple accepts Spatial Audio for &#8220;new and previously delivered music,&#8221; but Atmos <a href=\"https:\/\/itunespartner.apple.com\/music\/support\/5216-delivering-dolby-atmos-audio\">can only be delivered through Transporter<\/a>, its ingestion tool, so independents need an approved distributor or encoding house.<\/p>\n<p>Both help pages above said Atmos could not be added to a release after upload. Decide before release day, because adding it later can mean a full re-delivery, the same mechanics as <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/switch-distributors-without-losing-streams-catalog-transfer\/\">switching distributors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>When Atmos pays back<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do it<\/strong> for tracks where you own the multitracks and already clear tens of thousands of Apple Music plays a year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skip it<\/strong> for catalogue without stems, or tracks whose audience lives outside Apple Music, where the factor does not apply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audit first.<\/strong> Check each track&#8217;s Apple Music share of streams before paying per-track fees across an album.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/spotify-lossless-reached-50-markets-at-no-extra-cost-your-master-file-is-now-the-bottleneck\/\">Spotify&#8217;s lossless rollout<\/a>, this is a master-file decision, and like <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/streaming-253-million-tracks-88-percent-never-clear-spotify-pay-line\/\">Spotify&#8217;s royalty threshold<\/a>, it rewards tracks that already earn.
