Gnarls Barkley\u2019s<\/strong> upcoming tour, as lauded as it has been in pre-launch promotion, won’t look like past tours. And that’s for one pretty crucial reason: Only half<\/em> of the duo will be onstage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in September, Gnarls Barkley announced<\/a> the To Whom It Still Concerns<\/em><\/strong> tour as the group\u2019s first in 18 years, following the release of their third and final album, Atlanta<\/em><\/strong>. The North American run begins November 5 in San Francisco. The promoter\u2019s announcement now includes a disclaimer that Danger Mouse will not appear.<\/p>\n

A statement published by Pollstar<\/a> on September 22 said the shows had always been planned as a CeeLo Green-led run and that Danger Mouse was never scheduled to participate. Green subsequently clarified his collaborator\u2019s absence on social media, and updated promotional artwork bills the concerts as:<\/p>\n

That wording makes the offering easier to understand. It also opens a question that extends well beyond this particular tour: What does a band name actually promise<\/em> a ticket buyer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For some fans, the answer is in the song. Put CeeLo\u2019s voice behind \u201cCrazy,\u201d and the essential experience might be there. For most however, Gnarls Barkley means a particular creative partnership. The singer and the producer are both part of what they thought they were buying, the experience they expect to have.<\/p>\n

Neither expectation is inherently wrong, they’re preferential. But as groups extend into several decades, this becomes a common question. It’s just asked differently each time?<\/p>\n

Live music would lose a lot if every personnel change required a new name. Members always leave, drummers explode, some folks pass away during the duration of a band’s existence. That stuff just happens, but the music is expected to stay the same and that’s largely what fans want.<\/p>\n

But at what point do the scales tip towards a band doing karaoke of their own music? And then what happens when the new members start recording new music <\/em>as the same band name.<\/p>\n

Lynyrd Skynyrd<\/strong> offers one familiar example. Its 1987 return began as a tribute tour, with Ronnie Van Zant\u2019s younger brother Johnny on vocals, before developing into a continuing band that recorded new music. That history is part of the group\u2019s identity today. And yes, people have mixed feelings about it.<\/p>\n

Even \u201coriginal lineup\u201d can be a slippery standard too.<\/p>\n

The Temptations\u2019<\/strong> founding lineup included Elbridge \u201cAl\u201d Bryant; David Ruffin, whose voice many listeners associate with the group, joined afterward. The personnel present at the beginning aren\u2019t necessarily the people who define a band in the “public’s memory.”<\/p>\n

In Gnarls Barkley’s case, half of a duo being absent may feel like more substantial than several replacements in a large ensemble, especially when both members are alive and kicking. And even when a band’s musical identity divides neatly into fractions (guitar, bass, drums, vocals), in the case of Gnarls Barkley those duties are pretty crucially massive: production, vocals. <\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a difference between a band continuing and a band returning. A group that has toured through successive lineups gives audiences time to understand its evolution. A reunion pitch invites people to imagine something being restored.<\/p>\n

After an 18-year gap, that might be something audiences take seriously in a way the marketing can’t touch. After so long, people want <\/em>that duo back on stage, and they’ve waited too long for a consolation. And now two absences need to be rectified, the absence of Danger Mouse from the live project, and the absence of the band from the stage for nearly two decades.<\/p>\n

Which absence takes precedence over the communications?<\/p>\n

Or rather, “We’re back!” doesn’t really ring true now, does it?<\/p>\n

That makes the billing do more work. \u201cCeeLo Green performing Gnarls Barkley\u201d gives a ticket buyer a clearer basis for deciding. Someone may still happily buy the ticket. Someone else may pass. Both can make that choice without having to decode the announcement.<\/p>\n

For artists and promoters, this is a useful question at every scale. A local band reviving its name, a singer revisiting an old project, or a group advertising an anniversary show faces a version of the same problem: What will fans reasonably picture when they see that poster?<\/p>\n

Of course, in marketing, scarcity speaks almost just as loud as text sometimes. Saying less <\/em>about an experience build anticipation, fantasy, projection, and curiosity on the part of the music fan. That can be a massive tool in the promoter’s arsenal when it comes to building viral buzz.<\/p>\n

Arcade Fire’s<\/strong> 2013 pre-launch Reflektor <\/em>campaign<\/a> set the bar pretty high for cryptic all-points marketing. Seemingly all at once and overnight, graffiti reading: “9\/9\/9” (“Sept. 9 at 9pm) and a geometric grid that simply said “Reflektor” started appearing all over the globe. Over the next few months, the band started appearing alongside those images in popular culture broadcasts like SNL, <\/em>etc.<\/p>\n

Eventually the single dropped and people understood what was happening<\/a>, the anticipation could not have been higher. But buying a record the day it drops, and buying an expensive concert ticket months in advance, for a show you’re not totally in the know about, are two separate things.<\/p>\n

Communications strategy matters.
