{"id":21198,"date":"2026-10-01T16:56:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T16:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/a2ims-ian-harrison-sets-out-ai-and-infrastructure-priorities\/"},"modified":"2026-10-01T16:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T16:56:14","slug":"a2ims-ian-harrison-sets-out-ai-and-infrastructure-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/a2ims-ian-harrison-sets-out-ai-and-infrastructure-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"A2IM\u2019s Ian Harrison Sets Out AI and Infrastructure Priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ian Harrison<\/strong>, the new CEO of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/a2im.org\/\">American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)<\/a><\/strong>, has outlined priorities spanning AI policy and distribution infrastructure, which he says affect independents\u2019 control.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison defines independence in 2026 as ownership and decision-making outside the major-label system, coupled with close relationships with artists and audiences and adaptation to market changes.<\/p>\n<h2>AI policy and platform access<\/h2>\n<p>Harrison puts independents\u2019 share of the US market by ownership at <strong>more than 44%<\/strong>, and their worldwide share at roughly half. He argues that coordinating this sector is central to A2IM\u2019s role.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, A2IM is pursuing fair treatment and clearer rules around artificial intelligence (AI) and large technology companies. Harrison identifies four initiatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The reintroduction of the Protect Working Musicians Act, addressing collective bargaining for independent creators.<\/li>\n<li>The NO FAKES Act, addressing voice and likeness protections.<\/li>\n<li>The CLEAR Act, addressing transparency in AI training.<\/li>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/riaa-a2im-sag-aftra-and-others-launch-voluntary-ai-labeling-program-for-music\/\">AI labeling program<\/a> launched with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riaa.com\/\">Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpi.org\/\">International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A2IM is also working with digital service providers (DSPs) and AI companies on access, compensation and visibility. Harrison says its US location provides access to companies influencing music\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Community-building is another priority, with Indie Week, the Libera Awards and other events bringing independent music businesses together throughout the year.<\/p>\n<h2>Distribution and control<\/h2>\n<p>Harrison warns that concentrating distribution, royalty systems and data among a small number of businesses can weaken independent companies\u2019 autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>He points to the <strong>Downtown<\/strong> acquisition, saying scrutiny of the transaction led to the <strong>Curve<\/strong> divestment and an investment by <strong>Merlin<\/strong>. Maintaining an open ecosystem is a priority for trade organizations.<\/p>\n<h2>Long-term artist development<\/h2>\n<p>Harrison links independent labels\u2019 approach to their roots in the cultures and genres they serve. He says those relationships encourage experimentation in business models, marketing and music.<\/p>\n<p>He argues that independent structures can sustain the risk required for long-term artist development, while businesses accountable to public markets face constraints on how long they can carry that risk.<\/p>\n<h2>A2IM\u2019s international role<\/h2>\n<p>Harrison is joining the board of the <strong>Worldwide Independent Network (WIN)<\/strong> as it marks its <strong>20th anniversary<\/strong>. The network connects trade associations representing thousands of independent music businesses globally.<\/p>\n<p>He says A2IM\u2019s position in the world\u2019s largest music market brings access and insight to WIN.
