Releases Climate Risk Study and Toolkit for Live Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianlivemusic.ca\/\">Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA)<\/a><\/strong> has released a national study identifying <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/mega-music-festivals-are-harming-the-planet-say-scientists\/\">climate risk as a structural challenge for live music<\/a>, with weather-related event disruptions rising eightfold.<\/p>\n<p>It also released the first free resources from its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianlivemusic.ca\/climate-contingency-roadmap\">Climate Contingency Toolkit<\/a><\/strong> to help live music professionals prepare for and respond to climate-related disruption.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Disruptions and economic exposure<\/h2>\n<p>The report, <em>Sound Check: Climate Risk and Resilience in Canada&#8217;s Live Music Sector<\/em>, draws on the CLMA&#8217;s Climate Contingency survey, national disruption data and climate projections for the 2030s and 2050s.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s live music sector contributes <strong>$10.92 billion<\/strong> annually to gross domestic product (GDP), supports more than <strong>101,000 jobs<\/strong> and attracts nearly <strong>20 million visitors<\/strong> each year.<\/p>\n<p>Publicly reported weather-related disruptions averaged <strong>8 events a year between 2010 and 2022<\/strong>, compared with <strong>more than 65 a year between 2023 and 2025<\/strong>, an eightfold increase.<\/p>\n<p>If risks remain unaddressed, the study estimates extreme weather could threaten <strong>$1.2 billion to $3.0 billion<\/strong> in Canadian music-event and festival economic value between now and 2040.<\/p>\n<p>The central estimate is approximately <strong>$1.8 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Survey findings<\/h2>\n<p>Respondents described cancellation risks, financial losses and rising insurance costs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>70%<\/strong> report at least one high-impact weather day annually that causes partial or full event cancellation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>90%<\/strong> report direct financial costs or losses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>35%<\/strong> report moderate, measurable financial losses across multiple events, while <strong>14%<\/strong> report significant or severe impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Only <strong>15%<\/strong> report buying adverse weather insurance, while <strong>40%<\/strong> report increased insurance costs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>83%<\/strong> agree that climate change is already affecting their events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>87%<\/strong> expect impacts to increase over the next five years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>82%<\/strong> already consider climate risk when making event-planning decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Planning resources and venue preparation<\/h2>\n<p>The toolkit turns the findings into decision-making frameworks, hazard-specific standard operating procedures and other practical resources for live music professionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maddy Oliver<\/strong>, the CLMA&#8217;s Interim Executive Director, said climate risk affects live music events across Canada, particularly outdoor events, but also indoor ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope our toolkit helps to make climate preparedness more comprehensive and accessible for live music providers,\u201d Oliver said.<\/p>\n<p>The CLMA presented the findings, key recommendations and initial toolkit resources on <strong>October 1<\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/werklundcentre.ca\/home\">Werklund Centre<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Sarian<\/strong>, Werklund Centre&#8217;s President and chief executive officer, said the research would inform preparations to operate a redesigned <strong>Olympic Plaza<\/strong> as a cultural gathering place in <strong>2028<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Werklund Centre, we know that cultural spaces are also civic spaces, and that comes with a responsibility to prepare for the forces shaping how people gather,\u201d Sarian
