K-pop<\/a><\/strong> acts are incorporating harder electronic sounds into their recordings and concerts, bringing techno, hardstyle and other dance genres to audiences through choreography and international tours.<\/p>\n

KATSEYE<\/a><\/strong> demonstrated that shift at London\u2019s O2 on September 4<\/strong>, performing techno-driven material during a world tour that has visited the UK and Europe and is now crossing America.<\/p>\n

KATSEYE brings techno to the arena<\/h2>\n

With two members absent for health reasons, Daniela, Lara, Megan and Yoonchae performed in support of the group\u2019s recently released EP (extended play), WILD<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The set included \u201cPINKY UP\u201d and a reworked version of the viral track \u201cGnarly\u201d, which closed the concert. As of late September, \u201cPINKY UP\u201d led the EP with 235.7 million Spotify streams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Publicist David Lim<\/strong>, who works with LE SSERAFIM<\/strong> and aespa<\/strong> at The Outside Organisation<\/strong> in the UK, sees the sound developing alongside K-pop\u2019s emphasis on performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cK-pop is beginning to gravitate towards a different flavour of dance music, something grittier and glitchier rather than cold, expansive and industrial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lim says harder rhythms give performers opportunities for sharper, more intensive choreography. He describes the shift as another phase in K-pop\u2019s changing relationship with electronic music.<\/p>\n

The recordings behind the shift<\/h2>\n

Lim identifies 2024<\/strong> as a turning point, suggesting that Charli xcx<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Brat<\/em>, alongside artists such as Shygirl<\/strong> and PinkPantheress<\/strong>, helped influence the direction.<\/p>\n
