Fireboy DML dropped his fifth studio album, ZUKO!<\/em>, on Friday, October 16, pushing further into the pan-African, pan-Caribbean sound he has been building toward since his last record, 2024’s adedamola<\/em>. The 13-track project arrives through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE, the same distribution partnership that has carried every one of his albums since 2020, and it lands with one single already climbing the Official Nigeria Top 100 before the full body of work even dropped.<\/p>\n

What’s actually on ZUKO!<\/h2>\n

The tracklist, confirmed by Premium Times and eelive ahead of release, runs: “DEAR FATHER” (feat. Judah Earl), “BY FIRE!”, “CLAAT!” (feat. Masicka), “GODDESS” (feat. Lojay), “C’EST LA VIE”, “IMALI” (feat. JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela), “ONE MAN REGIMENT”, “KILOWI”, “ONAZO!”, “S.L.U.T (Sex Love Understanding Trust)”, “LIGHT OF DAWN”, “MIMI NAWE” and “FIGHTING”.<\/p>\n

The features map the album’s geography. Masicka brings Jamaican dancehall to “CLAAT!” Lojay keeps it Lagos on “GODDESS.” JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela pull “IMALI” toward the 3-step and Amapiano-adjacent sound coming out of South Africa right now, a lane Fireboy had already tested on the pre-release single of the same name. Per TurnTable Charts’ own chart page, “IMALI” debuted at No. 97 on the Official Nigeria Top 100, then climbed to No. 22 and on to a new peak of No. 20 in its third week, the week before the album dropped.<\/p>\n

Six years, four albums, one distributor<\/h2>\n

The quieter story in ZUKO!<\/em>‘s rollout is the business underneath it. YBNL Nation, Olamide’s label and Fireboy’s home since he signed off the strength of “Jealous,” struck its distribution and publishing deal with EMPIRE back in February 2020. Every Fireboy album since has carried that same imprint line: APOLLO<\/em> (2020), which peaked at No. 39 in Nigeria; Playboy<\/em> (2022), which reached No. 8 in Nigeria and No. 123 on the US Billboard 200; adedamola<\/em> (2024); and now ZUKO!<\/em><\/p>\n

That is four studio albums and more than six years of global chart placement, Grammy-adjacent collaborators and arena-level touring, all running through an independent distribution deal rather than a traditional major-label signing. For an industry conversation that still frequently frames “going major” as the only path to global reach, Fireboy’s catalog is a running counter-argument: EMPIRE handled the pipes, YBNL kept the ownership structure intact, and the music still found its way onto the Billboard charts and into South African and Caribbean collaborations without a major logo attached.<\/p>\n

Fireboy isn’t the only proof point inside the same label. Asake, who Olamide signed to YBNL in February 2022, struck his own distribution deal with EMPIRE that July and rode it straight to a Billboard 200 entry with Mr. Money with the Vibe<\/em> later that year, then again with Work of Art<\/em> in 2023. When Asake eventually left YBNL to launch his own imprint, Giran Republic, in early 2025, he kept the EMPIRE relationship rather than chasing a major-label upgrade. Critics who got early listens flagged a deliberate widening of Fireboy’s palette. eelive’s review walks through the record’s tonal swings: “DEAR FATHER” opens on anxiety about losing his position and a need for guidance, “BY FIRE!” leans into spiritual-warfare imagery built around the “die by fire” prayer line, and “IMALI” chases money over the South African-inspired rhythm bed. Shatter the Standards’ review goes further, noting the album moves across five languages, Yoruba for courtship and blessing, Patois and Zulu borrowed in for texture, English for the moments Fireboy wants the whole room to understand him, and reads the project as carrying one artist’s persona from church to club and back.<\/p>\n

That range is also the risk. Fireboy built his commercial base on soft, romantic songwriting; ZUKO!<\/em> is explicitly reaching past that, toward dancehall and Amapiano-adjacent production, and early commentary flagged by NotJustOk and TooXclusive shows fans split between calling the rollout “cinematic” and “worth the wait,” and others openly asking whether a sonic pivot this wide is his biggest statement or his biggest gamble.<\/p>\n

Rollout numbers and label reaction<\/h2>\n

The pre-release teaser, a cinematic clip of Fireboy in a bandaged, bloodied red suit driving an empty highway before revealing a license plate stamped with the album title, generated a visibly large response across Instagram and X in the days before release, according to NotJustOk’s rollout coverage, with TooXclusive separately confirming the scale of the fan reaction once the album landed. The headline here isn’t just that a major Nigerian artist has a new album out, it’s that this particular artist has now proven, four albums and six years deep, that an independent distribution deal can carry a global Afrobeats career through Billboard charts, dancehall crossovers and South African sonic experiments without a traditional major signing. That’s a more useful data point for the rest of the Nigerian industry than another “biggest album of the year” headline.
