Music’s emerging investment story contains an uncomfortable split: confidence in industry growth alongside doubts about which businesses will capture it. This week’s strongest theme is the possible repricing of creative ownership as artificial intelligence complicates the value of recorded work and live performance offers a different kind of commercial proposition.<\/p>\n

For Nigerian artists and music professionals, that raises a sharper question than whether the global business is expanding: which parts of an artist’s work will remain worth paying for, and who will control them?<\/p>\n

Growth does not settle the ownership question<\/h2>\n

Goldman Sachs has raised its recorded music forecast while favouring distributors and live entertainment businesses over music rights owners<\/a>. Those positions can coexist, but their combination deserves more attention than an optimistic headline alone.<\/p>\n

A growing market does not guarantee that every asset within it becomes more valuable. The distinction is between expecting more money to enter music and expecting ownership of recordings to remain the most attractive way to participate.<\/p>\n

The longer view reinforces that distinction. Goldman Sachs raised its long-term music revenue forecast to $198.1 billion for 2035, its first upward revision since 2022<\/a>, identifying subscription price increases, direct artist-to-fan sales and live activity as expected growth drivers.<\/p>\n

That is a forecast, not money already earned. Its usefulness lies partly in the different commercial mechanisms it puts together: charging more for access, selling something directly to a supporter, and persuading someone to attend an event.<\/p>\n

These mechanisms ask different things of an artist. A recording can be available without its creator having a compelling live proposition, while a committed concert audience does not automatically establish demand for every product carrying the artist’s name.<\/p>\n

Music AI risks begin with substitution<\/h2>\n

The most revealing companion story comes from comedy. Comedians say AI-generated Instagram performers are reproducing their routines<\/a>, bringing the question of creative substitution into unusually clear focus.<\/p>\n

These are allegations, and they should remain described that way. The summaries establish neither a legal finding nor a comparable incident involving a musician.<\/p>\n

Still, the editorial implication is difficult to ignore: if an audience encounters someone’s creative work through a substitute performer, the original creator may lose the opportunity to turn that encounter into recognition or income. The material and the person responsible for it can become commercially separated.<\/p>\n

For music, the useful question is therefore broader than whether an AI-generated track sounds convincing. It is whether listeners recognise authorship, care about it, and choose to support the creator when other listening options are available.<\/p>\n

None of this proves that recordings will lose their value. It does suggest that ownership and distinctiveness deserve separate examination: holding rights establishes an interest in a work, while making that work matter to an audience requires something further.<\/p>\n

An artist should resist treating a catalogue as self-explanatory evidence of future demand. The investment task is to understand what listeners value in it, including the writing, interpretation, personality or cultural specificity that makes a particular creator consequential.<\/p>\n

Live performance offers a different proposition<\/h2>\n

Shakira<\/a>‘s results illustrate the scale that physical attendance can reach: she completed 13 Madrid residency shows attended by more than 700,000 fans, while her world tour reached $534 million in reported box-office revenue<\/a>. Those figures describe attendance and ticket revenue, not artist profit.<\/p>\n

They also cannot serve as a sensible budget template for an independent act. Their analytical value is that a concert sells a particular occasion, with a performer, a place and an audience sharing the same event.<\/p>\n

That gives live performance a different relationship to abundance. Another recording being available does not recreate the experience of attending a chosen show, although an attractive experience still needs a price and production budget that make sense.<\/p>\n

The corporate activity points in a related direction. AEG Presents acquired French artist production and development company Auguri Productions as part of its expansion in France<\/a>, extending its business through a company involved in developing and producing artists.<\/p>\n

One acquisition cannot establish a universal investment strategy. Read beside the forecast and the touring figures, however, it supports a reasonable interpretation: the capacity to turn artistic demand into an organised event deserves attention as an asset in its own right.<\/p>\n

A Nigerian strategy needs its own scale<\/h2>\n

The wrong response would be to tell every Nigerian artist to tour harder. A large reported gross elsewhere supplies no evidence that a particular local show will cover its costs, and enthusiasm for live music cannot substitute for a workable budget.<\/p>\n

The more useful response is to separate creative ambition from assumptions about its commercial form. A song might justify a carefully produced performance, a smaller listening event or a direct offer to existing supporters, but each proposal should be tested on its own terms.<\/p>\n

For an independent artist deciding how to spend a limited budget, this changes the planning conversation. Alongside the recording itself, consider what would give someone a reason to seek out your performance or purchase something specifically from you.<\/p>\n

That is also a challenge to managers and other music professionals. If you propose an event, partnership or release campaign, explain the audience decision you expect it to produce and the evidence supporting that expectation.<\/p>\n

The African vantage point should sharpen the scrutiny of global forecasts. Before adopting an industry growth narrative as a personal business plan, ask which assumptions apply to your audience, your prices and your costs.<\/p>\n

What this means for artists<\/h2>\n

Start by reviewing your next project as several separate spending decisions. Give recording, promotion and any live activity their own budgets, expected outcomes and conditions for proceeding, so enthusiasm for one does not conceal weak economics in another.<\/p>\n

Before committing to a show, calculate how many paid attendees you need at a realistic ticket price to cover the proposed costs. Test interest before increasing the scale, and distinguish people expressing support from people prepared to buy.<\/p>\n

Examine agreements for how they address recordings, likeness, voice and reuse of creative material. Where the language is unclear, ask for a written explanation of the proposed permissions before deciding whether they fit your intentions.<\/p>\n

Finally, identify what supporters are choosing when they choose you. Build the next release or performance around that answer, then assess whether the spending produced the response you expected.
