Content ID Still Pays the Music."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Artists in Myanmar, Brunei and Timor-Leste cannot join the YouTube Partner Program, so their own channels earn nothing from ads, however many views they pull. Their music can still be paid for on YouTube, but through a different door: a rights owner&#8217;s Content ID claim.<\/p>\n<p>The split comes straight from YouTube&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/7101720\">YPP availability list<\/a>. It names Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. The other three are not on it.<\/p>\n<h2>Southeast Asia sits in three tiers<\/h2>\n<p>YPP means the YouTube Partner Program, the scheme that shares ad and subscription revenue with channel owners. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/72851\">eligibility rules<\/a> require you to &#8220;live in a country\/region where the YouTube Partner Program is available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Expanded YPP:<\/strong> Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Channels can join from 500 subscribers, with fan funding and Shopping but no ad share, according to YouTube&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/13429240\">expanded programme page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard YPP only:<\/strong> Cambodia and Laos. Entry is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No YPP:<\/strong> Myanmar, Brunei and Timor-Leste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers in every tier. For music income, the line that matters is the last one.<\/p>\n<h2>About 40.8 million internet users sit behind that line<\/h2>\n<p>DataReportal&#8217;s Digital 2026 country reports, written by Simon Kemp and published on 8 November 2025, count:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-myanmar\">Myanmar<\/a>: 39.8 million internet users, 72.5 percent of the population.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-timor-leste\">Timor-Leste<\/a>: 575,000 users, 40.4 percent.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2026-brunei-darussalam\">Brunei<\/a>: 463,000 users, 99.0 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The listener side is thin as well. YouTube&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/6307365\">Premium availability page<\/a> lists Cambodia and Laos but none of the three, so a local play there carries no subscription money at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Content ID follows the rights owner, not the channel<\/h2>\n<p>Content ID is YouTube&#8217;s audio and video fingerprinting system. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/2797370\">According to YouTube<\/a>, a matched upload can be blocked, tracked, or monetised &#8220;by running ads against it,&#8221; and those choices can differ country by country.<\/p>\n<p>Access is gated. A copyright owner must <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/1311402\">show exclusive rights<\/a> to the recordings and sign an agreement with YouTube. An independent artist normally reaches it through a distributor that holds that agreement and pays the artist under its own contract.<\/p>\n<p>The two tests are separate. YPP asks where the channel owner lives. Content ID asks who owns the recording.<\/p>\n<h2>The Official Artist Channel route<\/h2>\n<p>OAC means Official Artist Channel, the verified artist page that merges your own channel with the auto-generated Topic channel carrying your distributed releases.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/7336634\">OAC criteria<\/a> require at least one release delivered by a distributor or label, plus one of four links. YPP membership is only one of them. Another is having your music &#8220;distributed by a music partner listed in the YouTube Services Directory for Music Partners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So an artist in Yangon or Dili can hold an OAC without ever entering YPP, provided the distributor qualifies.<\/p>\n<h2>What to do with a catalogue from these markets<\/h2>\n<h3>Before release<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask your distributor, in writing, whether it administers Content ID for your recordings and whether it is listed in the YouTube Services Directory for Music Partners.<\/li>\n<li>Keep rights exclusive. YouTube excludes music licensed without exclusivity, so a track built on a non-exclusive beat lease cannot go into Content ID.<\/li>\n<li>Do not list a foreign address to get into YPP. The rule is where you live, not where the channel says it is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>After release<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Request an OAC through the distributor, so your Topic tracks and your own videos sit on one artist page.<\/li>\n<li>Read YouTube income by territory. Plays in markets where Premium is sold, such as Thailand or Singapore, can carry subscription revenue. Local plays cannot.<\/li>\n<li>If you live in Cambodia or Laos, plan around the 1,000-subscriber bar, not 500.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>InterSpace Distribution sets up Content ID and Official Artist Channels as part of delivery, with YouTube income reported per asset in the artist-facing royalty dashboard.
