That is 53% of the first list and 70% of the second. Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/fola-seyi-vibez-nigeria-charts-streams-vs-radio\/\">streams and radio reach point to different winners<\/a>, so a distributor&#8217;s share of a chart is not one number. It is one number per source.<\/p>\n<h2>What the two lists show<\/h2>\n<p>The arithmetic is simple. Eight slots out of 15 on Spotify Nigeria is 53%. Seven slots out of 10 on the TurnTable list is 70%. The same two artists and the same distributor sit behind both counts, and the same coverage notes that the stream data and the radio data do not crown the same act.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That gap matters more than the concentration itself. A slot count treats every track as one unit. It does not say how far apart the tracks are, and it does not say which source a given track leads. A track can hold a high place where listeners press play on a digital service provider (DSP) and a lower place where audiences are counted by radio reach. The two measures count different things: plays on one side, audience exposure on the other.<\/p>\n<h2>Why slot share misleads a rightsholder<\/h2>\n<p>A label reading these lists could easily conclude that a distributor with 53% of one chart is simply strong. The better reading is narrower. That distributor holds eight of 15 places on one measure, and its roster splits its leadership across two measures.<\/p>\n<p>For an independent, three consequences follow.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Slot share is not revenue share.<\/strong> No stream totals accompany the lists, so a slot count cannot be converted into earnings. That is the one gap to respect: do not forecast income from a rank.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Each source rewards a different asset.<\/strong> Streams reward repeat plays of a track. Radio reach rewards placement that exposes the track to a broad audience. A catalogue that is strong in one and absent in the other has an uneven profile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concentration hides the tail.<\/strong> When one distributor&#8217;s artists fill most of a short list, everything else competes for the remaining slots. A release outside the top 15 is competing for attention against a roster, not against a single act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What the distributor&#8217;s staffing says about the question<\/h2>\n<p>Distributors are building marketing capacity at the same time. Believe <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/where-distributors-are-hiring-reading-believe-too-lost-and-bmg-job-moves-as-a-service-map\/\">placed an Amazon Music hire under its chief marketing officer<\/a>, and Too Lost <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/where-distributors-are-hiring-reading-believe-too-lost-and-bmg-job-moves-as-a-service-map\/\">appointed a finance chief with a corporate development background<\/a>. Neither move tells you what a distributor will do for your next release. Both tell you which functions it is paying for, and that is a fair basis for a question: where does marketing attention go when two or three acts already fill a chart?<\/p>\n<p>The same logic applies to promotion spend. A campaign budget that covers <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/paid-social-youtube-reach-and-licence-terms-belong-in-one-campaign-budget\/\">reach, testing and rights cleared together<\/a> should also specify which measure the reach is meant to move. Buying exposure for a track that already leads on streams is a different decision from buying it for a track that leads on radio.<\/p>\n<h2>A four-step audit for your own catalogue<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Count slots held over list length, per source.<\/strong> If you have two tracks on a top 15 list, that is 13% (two divided by 15). Do the same for each list you can see, and keep the results separate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rank the same tracks on each source.<\/strong> If your order changes between the stream list and the radio list, you have two audiences, not one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask your distributor for reporting split by source.<\/strong> Request stream counts by service and any radio or broadcast data it holds, so you are not inferring from a rank.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tie each spend line to one measure.<\/strong> Write down whether a given promotion buy targets plays or reach. Review it against that measure only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The decision rule<\/h2>\n<p>If a track leads on streams but not on radio reach, treat it as a playlist and repeat-listening asset. Put the next dollar into testing creative and retention, not into broader exposure. If a track leads on radio reach but trails on streams, the audience is hearing it without pressing play, and the gap is a conversion problem. Spend on the step between hearing and playing.<\/p>\n<p>If your catalogue appears on neither list, the 53% and 70% figures are the benchmark that describes what a single distributor&#8217;s roster can hold at the top.
