Composer and producer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelwhalen.com\/\">Michael Whalen<\/a><\/strong> and DJ <strong>Luisa Houseworks<\/strong> describe the different ways artists can build those connections.<\/p>\n<h2>Streams and ticket sales<\/h2>\n<p>Whalen, a two-time Emmy winner and professor who has worked with Stephen Sondheim, Fiona Apple, Brian Wilson and Carole King, calls monthly listeners \u201cone of music\u2019s most misunderstood numbers.\u201d He also runs a YouTube channel about artist development.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2026, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postmalone.com\/\">Post Malone<\/a><\/strong> had about 7 million more monthly listeners than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliviarodrigo.com\/\">Olivia Rodrigo<\/a><\/strong>. Malone canceled six planned US shows and his dates in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, saying he was recording an album. Rodrigo had sold out all 85 dates of <em>The Unraveled Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Whalen said streaming can introduce people to an artist, but the listener must choose to take another action. He also acknowledged the range of work artists face, from making music and videos to promotion, distribution and responding to messages.<\/p>\n<h2>Different ways to connect<\/h2>\n<p>Houseworks, a DJ and host of the <strong>female:pressure<\/strong> podcast, said artists need not follow a single approach. Some regularly share mixes, appearances, shows and parts of their creative process; others keep a lower profile.<\/p>\n<p>She cited electronic duo <strong>Autechre<\/strong>, who maintain a sparse website and interact with fans chiefly at live shows. Independent Irish singer-songwriter <strong>S\u00edomha<\/strong> recently removed her music from Spotify and deleted her mainstream social media profiles, choosing to focus on Patreon and Bandcamp.<\/p>\n<p>UK electronic artist <strong>Logic1000<\/strong>, also known as Samantha Poulter, uses a combination of platforms. Her album <em>Confirmation!<\/em> includes \u201cThe Only One,\u201d featuring Christine and the Queens, which has gained attention on TikTok.
