Peermusic has acquired 120 Publishing and appointed Karen Hamilton to lead Peermusic Australia.<\/a> For a writer whose catalogue is administered through a business that changes hands, the useful question is concrete: which company is authorised to collect each royalty, and which company must account for it to the writer?<\/p>\n

Start with the authority to collect<\/h2>\n

An acquisition identifies a change at the business level. It is not, by itself, an instruction to redirect a royalty payment. A writer or label needs to trace the agreement covering each work: who signed it, what rights it covers, which territories it reaches and whether it permits another company to perform the collection work. That review turns the announcement into a set of account checks instead of an assumption about where money now goes.<\/p>\n

Separate three roles in that check. One party may own or control a publishing interest, another may administer a work, and a third may issue the statement or payment. Where those roles sit with different parties, a change to one name does not answer every accounting question. The contract and the collection records should identify the party with authority for the income being claimed. The royalty statement should identify the party that received it and the deduction, if any, before the writer\u2019s share was calculated.<\/p>\n

The Peermusic and 120 Publishing transaction<\/a> provides a reason to request that mapping for affected works. The decision for a catalogue owner is to confirm the mandate before changing payment details or treating a new company name on a statement as proof that every right has moved.<\/p>\n

Follow the money by work and income stream<\/h2>\n

A useful reconciliation starts with a work identifier in the writer\u2019s own catalogue records, then follows that work through the administrator\u2019s records, each collection claim and the resulting statement. Keep the contract next to the statement. If the name collecting a royalty differs from the name on the writer\u2019s agreement, ask for the document or instruction that connects them. The answer should identify the work and the income concerned, not merely the corporate relationship.<\/p>\n

Mechanical and performance income should have separate lines in that exercise. So should any income received for a period before the business change and paid afterward. The dates matter because the party that receives cash may have to account for a use that occurred under an earlier arrangement. A writer can then ask a precise question: which entity received this amount, for which work and period, and under which collection authority?<\/p>\n

For an independent label that also handles publishing paperwork, the same method prevents a master recording receipt from being mistaken for a publishing receipt. Record the source and right alongside each payment. A single catalogue title can appear across agreements and statements, but a matching title alone does not show that the same right was paid twice or that a payment is missing.<\/p>\n

Keep platform negotiations on a separate track<\/h2>\n

Universal Music Group has discussed plans to renegotiate streaming agreements with digital service providers (DSPs).<\/a> A negotiation can change the terms under which a company licenses or accounts for its catalogue. It does not tell an individual writer or label that an existing royalty statement has changed. First identify the agreement that governs the relevant right, then look for the effective term and the first accounting period to which a change applies.<\/p>\n

Platform terms can affect a catalogue through permission to use content or through the classification of a subscription.<\/a> Those are different entries in a rights file. Permission belongs with the licence and the party authorised to grant it. Classification belongs with the usage and revenue records used to calculate a payment. If an administrator or publisher changes, the catalogue owner should know who can answer each kind of question on its behalf.<\/p>\n

This creates a practical order of work. Check collection authority first. Check the applicable platform term second. Compare the statement with that term and its effective period third. A forecast based on a proposed agreement skips the step that matters to the catalogue: the point at which a term actually governs its receipts.<\/p>\n

Keep a handoff file<\/h2>\n

The file need not be elaborate. It should let someone other than the person who signed the original deal explain why a particular company collected a particular payment. For each work affected by a change in administrator or publisher, retain:<\/p>\n
