Spotify could launch an artificial intelligence (AI) cover and remix tool for Premium subscribers in early 2027.<\/a> For an independent rightsholder, the immediate decision is which recordings and compositions to review for possible participation, rather than what revenue to put in a forecast.<\/p>\n

Access is not a payment rule<\/h2>\n

The proposed access description says \u201cfor Premium subscribers\u201d<\/a>. That identifies the potential user group. It does not assign income to the recording being changed, the resulting version, or either rightsholder. A subscriber\u2019s ability to use a tool and a rightsholder\u2019s ability to earn from its output are separate questions.<\/p>\n

The distinction matters because a cover or remix can create listening activity around a catalogue item without that activity appearing as a play of the existing recording. A label assessing the tool should therefore ask what the listener plays: the original, a new version, or both. It should then ask which catalogue entry receives each play in its own records. Counting every use of the tool as another play of the original would turn a product interaction into an unsupported royalty estimate.<\/p>\n

Participating artists have not been identified.<\/a> That unknown changes the first decision: an artist or label should prepare its rights information, but should wait for a participation offer before assigning the proposed tool a release budget or an income target.<\/p>\n

Trace the catalogue item that gets played<\/h2>\n

A useful review starts at the level of each item the label controls. For every recording it would consider making available, the label can identify who makes the participation decision and where income from that recording is currently recorded. Next, keep the proposed output distinct from the existing item.
