A German radio play can create two neighbouring-rights claims for a self-releasing artist: one as a performer and one as the producer of the recording.<\/strong> GVL, Germany\u2019s collective for performers and record producers, says artists who operate their own labels should also sign a producer agreement. Uploading the track to a distributor does not make either GVL registration for you. GVL\u2019s guidance for self-marketers<\/a> spells out the second claim.<\/p>\n

This matters when a release moves beyond a streaming playlist into radio, television or public playback. GVL collects for certain secondary uses, including broadcasts, public performance and private copying. It says on-demand streaming is handled through individual licensing arrangements, so a Spotify stream is not an extra GVL payment. GVL explains the boundary<\/a> on its performer page.<\/p>\n

One recording, two registrations<\/h2>\n

A singer or instrumentalist signs a free performer rights-administration agreement, then tells GVL which recordings they played on and what they did. The contribution goes through the my.gvl<\/em> performer portal. GVL includes singers, instrumentalists and other credited contributors, not just the name on the sleeve. Its performer guide<\/a> says older contributions can still matter when recordings are used later.<\/p>\n

The person or company that owns the record-producer rights takes a different route. GVL asks that rights holder to sign a producer agreement and register each track in label.gvl<\/em>. A label code and portal access follow the agreement; broadcaster play reports alone do not supply all the repertoire details needed to pay a claim. GVL\u2019s producer workflow<\/a> sets out those steps.<\/p>\n

If you paid for and control the master, check your contract before deciding who should make the producer claim. A performer credit does not establish master ownership, and a distributor\u2019s delivery receipt does not settle a label\u2019s neighbouring-rights mandate. Record the actual rights holder, the International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) for each master, and the contributors\u2019 roles in the same catalogue record.<\/p>\n

Why a play report is not a payout<\/h2>\n

GVL matches broadcaster usage to repertoire and performer notifications. For performers, it weighs the contribution category and the duration and type of broadcast, then applies the value of a contribution point. Producer remuneration likewise depends on reported broadcast minutes for the individual recording. There is no honest flat \u201cGerman radio rate per spin\u201d to put in a release budget. Make a simple audit sheet for every track: ISRC, master owner, label name, performer names and roles, release date, and any radio or TV use you can document. Compare the sheet with both GVL portals and ask collaborators to submit their own performer contributions. If GVL requests proof, a session agreement, fee statement or producer confirmation is more useful than an unsupported credit. Its performer FAQ<\/a> describes acceptable evidence.<\/p>\n

Work back from the registration window<\/h2>\n

GVL\u2019s current schedule<\/a> lists 31 December 2026 as the deadline for performer contributions to the final 2023 distribution. It warns that a late submission may not be verified or paid. The calendar is a filing deadline, not a promise that the money arrives in December: GVL schedules that final distribution for the fourth quarter of 2027.<\/p>\n

The distribution plan<\/a> also explains why an early payment may change. GVL makes initial and follow-up distributions while contributions are still being registered; after the window closes, reserved money that remains unclaimed is released to registered beneficiaries. A catalogue audit before each final deadline is therefore more valuable than waiting for a single annual statement.<\/p>\n

German neighbouring rights sit beside other income, not inside your streaming dashboard. The Dutch Sena system<\/a> and US SoundExchange claims<\/a> show why the territory and right must be named before comparing payouts.
