Spotify is testing an AI-powered remix feature<\/a>. For an independent label, the immediate catalogue question is concrete: can it identify who controls the recording and who owns the song before a new version enters a rights discussion?<\/p>\n

A single track can carry claims that belong to different people. German radio royalties illustrate the distinction between performer and record-producer claims<\/a>, while Malaysia\u2019s songwriter royalty rules show why a co-writer\u2019s share must be identified separately<\/a>. An AI remix test does not erase those distinctions. It makes an accurate rights record more useful.<\/p>\n

Start with the recording and the song<\/h2>\n

A label\u2019s recording file and a songwriter\u2019s work record answer different questions. The first identifies the recording and the parties connected to it. The second identifies the composition and its writers. A team assessing a proposed remix needs both records to establish which claims it can speak for and which require another party\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

Germany offers a practical warning against treating every recording-related payment as one line. A self-releasing artist can receive German radio royalties through separate performer and record-producer claims, and each right needs its own registration<\/a>. That rule concerns radio, not Spotify\u2019s test. The operational lesson is that control of a release does not, by itself, tell a team whether every associated claim has been documented.<\/p>\n

The songwriting side has its own gaps. Malaysia\u2019s collecting society can hold the share of an identified co-writer who is not a member for up to three years<\/a>. Identifying the person and identifying a route for the money are separate tasks. An independent catalogue should therefore keep writer names and agreed shares with its recording information, then check who can claim each share.<\/p>\n
