PRISINDO\u2019s 50\/25\/25 public-use royalty split<\/a> and SRR Capital\u2019s equal division of net earnings with artists<\/a> both describe how money is divided. They do not start with the same pot of money. For an independent catalogue, the useful question beside any percentage is: a percentage of what?<\/p>\n

Start with the pot of money<\/h2>\n

A percentage can allocate a royalty among rights holders, divide earnings under a financing agreement or describe a catalogue\u2019s share of listening. Each answers a different business question. Reading the percentage without its denominator can make an attractive split look like a payout rate, or make an audience trend look like an income statement.<\/p>\n

The distinction is visible in Australian artists\u2019 share of domestic streaming, which has fallen to its lowest level on record<\/a>. That share describes where listening goes within a market. It says nothing by itself about the amount received for a particular recording. A catalogue owner needs both the listening measure and the receipts attributable to the catalogue before using the trend to make a revenue decision.<\/p>\n

The same discipline applies when assessing a deal. An equal division of net earnings tells an artist how an agreed earnings pool is shared. It does not identify that pool in the way a gross revenue figure would. Put the named revenue stream, any deductions and the resulting amount beside the split before comparing offers.<\/p>\n

Rights splits follow rights<\/h2>\n

Indonesia provides a clear example of why one recording can produce more than one accounting trail. Recording, songwriting and performer claims are distinct, and PRISINDO\u2019s 50\/25\/25 formula applies to public-use royalties rather than setting a Spotify per-stream rate<\/a>. Applying that formula to a streaming statement would put the wrong denominator under it.<\/p>\n

The collection route also matters. WAMI, distributors and performer societies handle different ledgers<\/a>. A distributor\u2019s recording statement cannot serve as a complete account of every songwriting or performer claim associated with the same track. For a label, the practical task is to match each claimed right to the organisation or agreement that accounts for it, then reconcile the relevant statement on its own terms.<\/p>\n

That produces a useful catalogue question: which receipt is this percentage supposed to divide? If the answer is a public-use royalty, use the public-use allocation. If the answer is income from a recording distributed to a streaming service, use the agreement and statement governing that recording income. The percentages may appear in the same catalogue review, but they belong on separate lines.<\/p>\n

Net earnings need an accounting definition<\/h2>\n

SRR Capital\u2019s model combines artist advances, label services and marketing funds with an equal split of net earnings<\/a>. The split is easy to read; the accounting order determines what reaches it. Money enters through the covered releases, the agreement determines what counts in the earnings calculation, and the parties divide the resulting net amount. An artist evaluating that model should therefore read the earnings definition alongside the headline split.<\/p>\n

The exact net calculation depends on the agreement. That is the point to settle before using the split in a release budget. Identify which receipts enter the calculation, which costs are charged against them, when the calculation occurs and which statement shows the result. An advance, a service and marketing funding are different inputs to the deal; their presence alone does not state how each affects the net figure.<\/p>\n

This is also why two deals with the same stated percentage can produce different artist receipts. The percentage only acts after the accounting rules have established its base. A comparison should start with the same catalogue income and follow each agreement\u2019s definitions through to the amount divided.<\/p>\n

Use each percentage for one decision<\/h2>\n

Ausify is running for another month while Australian artists\u2019 share of domestic streaming sits at a record low<\/a>. A campaign and a market-share measure can direct attention to local listening, but the share alone cannot tell an individual label what its catalogue earned. Likewise, internet radio can reach independent hip-hop listeners outside an artist\u2019s local market, while audience size and promotional results vary<\/a>. Reach is a reason to measure the audience; it is not itself a royalty receipt.<\/p>\n
