The price was not disclosed, and Zebralution\u2019s co-managing directors will remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>WMG announced the purchase on November 3. Berlin-based Zebralution distributes independent labels in Germany and across Europe; Bookwire is a digital publishing company based in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<h2>How Zebralution changed hands<\/h2>\n<p>Warner took a majority stake in Zebralution in 2007. In April 2017, its Central Europe division agreed to sell the company to an independent music consortium as part of divestments WMG arranged with Merlin and the European independent music trade association IMPALA after buying Parlophone Label Group in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The buyers were <strong>Christof Ellinghaus<\/strong> of City Slang; <strong>Konrad von L\u00f6hneysen<\/strong>, owner of Embassy of Music; and Zebralution\u2019s original founders, <strong>Kurt Thielen<\/strong> and <strong>Sascha Lazimbat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>German collecting society GEMA acquired a majority stake in December 2019 and later became Zebralution\u2019s sole shareholder. In January of this year, New York-based <strong>Insight Partners<\/strong> agreed to buy it. Insight controls Bookwire through the UK\u2019s Delta Software Group and integrated Zebralution into Bookwire when the purchase closed in March.<\/p>\n<p>Bookwire retained the audiobook and digital publishing businesses. In April, it announced that the music distribution business would become a separate company, Zebralution Music.<\/p>\n<p>Insight also invested in DistroKid in 2021 in a deal that valued the platform at 1,300 million dollars. In July, CVC Capital Partners agreed to take a majority stake in DistroKid, while Insight retained a significant minority stake.<\/p>\n<h2>Management and technology<\/h2>\n<p>Co-managing directors and co-founders von L\u00f6hneysen and Lazimbat will continue to lead Zebralution Music\u2019s distribution business. They will work closely with <strong>Niels Walboomers<\/strong>, president of Warner Music Central Europe, to align strategic operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an exciting new chapter for Zebralution Music, but for our label partners and the people we work with every day, everything will remain the same,\u201d Lazimbat said. Von L\u00f6hneysen said that was \u201ceasy to say\u201d in his case because his label, Embassy of Music, has been a client for more than 20 years and will remain one.<\/p>\n<p>Zebralution\u2019s labels will gain direct access to the distribution, analytics and financial tools of <strong>Revelator<\/strong>, which Warner acquired in April as part of an expansion of its distribution and label services. \u201cWhat changes is the technology and the additional resources we now have available,\u201d Lazimbat said.<\/p>\n<p>Walboomers credited the two executives with building \u201cone of the most trusted homes for independent music in Europe.\u201d He said Zebralution\u2019s regional expertise, combined with Warner\u2019s technology and global reach, would give partners \u201cfirst-rate capabilities without asking them to give up their independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Ruhrmann<\/strong>, Bookwire\u2019s chief executive and co-founder, said it was \u201cespecially fitting\u201d for Zebralution Music to return \u201cin a sense, to a former home.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Independent sector response<\/h2>\n<p>When Warner acquired Revelator in April, <a href=\"https:\/\/impalamusic.org\">IMPALA<\/a> said \u201cthe independent ecosystem loses another piece of its infrastructure\u201d and called the trend \u201cbad news for artists, fans and Europe\u2019s diversity as a whole.\u201d No response from IMPALA to the Zebralution Music acquisition has been reported.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Warner Music Group has
