Follower growth has slowed across 50 Spotify user playlists, according to 11A founder Austin Staubus, as Spotify rolls out a spam filter.<\/a> For an independent artist or label, the immediate question is whether fewer new followers lead to fewer listeners for the recordings those playlists carry. A slower follower count alone cannot answer it.<\/p>\n

Measure the point where discovery changes<\/h2>\n

Staubus\u2019s observation concerns follower growth on user playlists<\/a>. It does not, by itself, measure plays of a track, income from those plays or a change in the terms under which Spotify pays rightsholders. Those are different points in the chain. A person must encounter a playlist before deciding to follow it; a follower must listen before a recording can register a stream. A rights payment comes later.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters during Spotify\u2019s spam filter rollout and scrutiny of its search and recommendation systems<\/a>. A playlist operator may see a change in new followers while an artist on the playlist sees no comparable change in listening. The reverse is possible too: listening may change even if the follower count barely moves. Neither outcome identifies the cause of Staubus\u2019s reported slowdown.<\/p>\n

Teams should therefore keep a dated record for each playlist placement they can track: when the track appeared, the playlist\u2019s follower count at that point, subsequent follower growth, and the track\u2019s listening over the same period. Compare those records before deciding that a discovery change has affected the catalogue. Treat Staubus\u2019s 50 playlists as a reason to check your own exposure, not as a conversion rate for your releases.<\/p>\n

Separate access from payment<\/h2>\n

Spotify\u2019s Fresh Finds Summit is set for November 4 and 5 in Los Angeles for emerging independent artists in its Fresh Finds Forward program.<\/a> That is another route through which the platform can give artists attention. It is distinct from a user playlist gaining followers through search or recommendation. An invitation to a program and growth on a user playlist measure different forms of access; neither is a royalty statement.<\/p>\n

For a label deciding where to spend staff time, the useful question is what each route can produce for a particular recording. Record the activity that follows a playlist placement or program opportunity, then check the listening and income associated with that period. Do not assign a monetary value to a new follower or to program participation without observing what happens after it. Access can improve a track\u2019s chance of being heard, but the playlist follower count does not state what a rightsholder earned.<\/p>\n

The same separation applies on the rights side. Indonesia\u2019s music royalty system distinguishes claims for recordings, songwriting and performance, and PRISINDO\u2019s 50\/25\/25 public-use split is not a Spotify per-stream price.<\/a> A change in playlist discovery does not turn that public-use split into a streaming rate. When listening changes, identify which income account you are checking before you compare amounts.<\/p>\n
