Spain’s songwriter society pays royalties from digital platforms and large concerts monthly, while ordinary live performances settle quarterly.<\/a> That difference gives an artist or label a practical first step when income appears to be missing: identify the use before deciding that the payment is late.<\/p>\n

Match the use to its payment cycle<\/h2>\n

A single song can generate entries on different statements at different times. In Spain, digital platform royalties follow a monthly cycle<\/a>. The same monthly rhythm applies to large concerts<\/a>, but ordinary live performances follow a quarterly cycle<\/a>. Treating all three uses as one expected payment creates a false exception: the ordinary concert may still be in its normal cycle when the platform income is ready for review.<\/p>\n

Start a reconciliation with the use, not the balance. Record whether the expected income came from a digital platform, a large concert or an ordinary live performance. Put the relevant month or quarter beside it. Then compare the statement with that category. This turns \u201cthe song has not paid\u201d into a question that can be checked: has the payment cycle for this particular use reached its review point?<\/p>\n

Keep the categories separate even when they concern the same work. A platform entry cannot confirm that a concert has been accounted for, and a concert entry cannot settle a question about platform income. The useful unit of review is the work paired with the use and its payment period.<\/p>\n

Check the information that connects use to work<\/h2>\n

The calendar tells you when to look. It cannot, by itself, show whether a use has been connected to the correct work. Spain’s songwriter royalty process calls for artists and labels to register works, track setlists and reconcile society payments.<\/a> Those are distinct jobs. Registration establishes the work being tracked; a setlist records what was performed; reconciliation tests what reached the statement.<\/p>\n

For a live performance, keep the setlist with the event record so that a missing entry can be investigated as a specific use. For platform income, start with the registered work and the relevant payment period. In each case, compare what you expected with what the society actually lists. A missing statement line is a more useful finding than an unexplained difference in the total.<\/p>\n

The order matters. If the work record or performance information needs attention, address that before treating the statement total as the whole problem. If the information is in place and the relevant cycle has passed, the artist or label has a defined item to query: a named work, a type of use and a period. That is a narrower request than asking why a catalogue earned less than expected.<\/p>\n

Recognise a different kind of dispute<\/h2>\n

Some royalty questions cannot be resolved by waiting for another statement or correcting a usage record. SoundExchange and Music Choice have proposed damages discovery followed by settlement talks in their dispute over business-service royalties.<\/a> The proposed sequence concerns a contested amount in a dispute. It does not describe the ordinary monthly or quarterly processing of a songwriter’s claim.<\/p>\n

That distinction changes the work a rightsholder should do. A routine reconciliation asks whether a particular use appears in the appropriate payment period. A disputed royalty claim asks what is owed under the contested arrangement and requires evidence suited to that question. Do not route every missing entry into the same conversation. First determine whether the expected use is absent from a normal collection cycle or whether the amount itself is disputed. The former calls for a work-and-use check. The latter calls for a clear record of the claim and the basis for the amount being sought.<\/p>\n
