Jamaican songwriter royalties need a second registration after a track reaches streaming services.<\/strong> A distributor delivers the recording; the Jamaica Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers (JACAP) identifies the underlying song and its writers for collective rights income. Its writer application<\/a> asks for at least three commercially recorded and publicly released works. That is a membership threshold, not a rule that a song earns nothing until its writer has three releases.<\/p>\n

The distinction matters to an artist who writes and records their own music. One person can own the composition and the master, but those are separate assets with separate reporting routes. A clean upload can put the master on a digital service without completing the songwriter’s JACAP record.<\/p>\n

What JACAP pays for<\/h2>\n

JACAP is a collective management organisation, or CMO, for composers, lyricists and publishers. The Jamaica Intellectual Property Office<\/a> says it manages performing and mechanical reproduction rights in musical works. Public play in a bar, broadcast on radio and some forms of copying involve the song, even when the recording belongs to someone else.<\/p>\n

JACAP’s FAQ<\/a> says its members should register works early when songs play on radio, television or the internet. Registration helps the society connect a reported use to the correct composition and owner; it does not create copyright. Jamaican copyright protection arises when an original song is fixed in a recorded or written form, according to the same guidance.<\/p>\n

The recording lane is different. The Jamaica Music Society (JAMMS) represents sound recording interests and performers in its relevant collections. Its member FAQ<\/a> explicitly says joining JAMMS does not replace a writer’s JACAP or other songwriter society affiliation. An artist who wrote the song and sang on the record should audit both lanes.<\/p>\n

Build the application from the release file<\/h2>\n

JACAP asks writer applicants to document three or more commercially recorded, released songs and provide proof such as online distribution. Its application page also asks for an MP3 with the track title, artist, composers or authors, International Standard Recording Code (ISRC), label and genre. Identity documents and a tax registration number are listed separately.<\/p>\n

That list is a practical metadata test. Before delivery, agree the legal names of everyone who wrote the music or lyrics, their shares and the title spelling. Keep the agreement alongside the release file. An ISRC identifies a particular recording, so it helps connect the application to the audio; it does not substitute for naming the composition’s owners.<\/p>\n

A label applying as a publisher faces a separate threshold: JACAP asks for a catalogue of at least five commercially published or recorded works, along with writer agreements and company documents. A label that only controls masters should establish whether it has publishing rights before claiming the publisher share. Calling yourself the label on a distributor dashboard does not settle that question.<\/p>\n

Check the payment threshold, then chase missing uses<\/h2>\n

JACAP says it pays members twice a year when the amount due reaches J$500<\/strong>. Amounts below J$500 are held until they reach that threshold. A blank bank deposit after one radio play therefore is not, on its own, evidence that no royalty was tracked.<\/p>\n

Its FAQ also advises writers to keep their own performance records and notify the society about international performances where data may be incomplete. Save station logs, event dates, venue details and any cue sheets you can obtain. Reconcile those records against the next statement before assuming that a platform’s master royalty report accounts for the song side.<\/p>\n
