Vietnamese songwriter royalties need a separate work record and a quarterly check, even when the recording is already live on streaming services.<\/strong> The Vietnam Center for Protection of Music Copyright (VCPMC) says members can register songs, track verification and inspect distributions through its website or app. For a self-releasing writer, the first audit is simple: compare the composition record with the recording delivered by the distributor.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters when a singer writes the song, owns the master and assumes one upload covers both income streams. A distributor\u2019s recording statement tracks the commercial use of the master. VCPMC represents authors and music copyright owners under a separate authorization agreement, licenses uses of musical works and distributes the resulting royalties. Its description of its role<\/a> makes the two ledgers clear.<\/p>\n

Start with the work, not the stream count<\/h2>\n

VCPMC\u2019s member handbook<\/a> asks applicants for the work list, music and lyric writers, co-authors, rights percentages and payment account details. It also asks for evidence where ownership came through inheritance or transfer. Put the signed split agreement beside that record before a release goes live: a song with two writers needs a defensible allocation, regardless of who uploaded the audio.<\/p>\n

Joining VCPMC is an authorization for rights management, the handbook says, not a government copyright registration certificate or a transfer of ownership. A writer can apply at an office, online or through the app; VCPMC then confirms the application and issues an authorization contract. The account gives members access to their registered works and verification status. Do not mistake a distributor account for that membership record.<\/p>\n

For each new song, check the title, alternate spelling, composer, lyricist, publisher or owner and each share against your release metadata and split sheet. If a collaborator has assigned a share to a publisher, record the party that actually controls it. This is an operating checklist drawn from VCPMC\u2019s required fields, not a claim that a matching algorithm will repair incomplete paperwork.<\/p>\n

One small box can change the licensing picture<\/h2>\n

VCPMC\u2019s handbook gives an unusually specific instruction for a new work already subject to a time-limited exclusive agreement with a service provider: tick the \u201cExclusive\u201d field and state the provider and exact term. That is a reason to read a label, publishing or platform deal before entering the work. A vague \u201cexclusive\u201d note with no end date leaves the rights team unable to compare the society mandate with the contract.<\/p>\n

Build a simple rights sheet with three columns: the party, the right granted and its start and end dates. If the recording deal covers only the master, do not copy its exclusivity into the composition record. If a separate composition agreement exists, document precisely what it covers. VCPMC\u2019s field is an administrative prompt; it does not decide a disputed contract for you.<\/p>\n

Reconcile the quarter, then ask a precise question<\/h2>\n

VCPMC says it distributes to domestic and international right holders four times a year<\/a>. Its handbook says members can open the copyright-royalties menu, see amounts collected and paid for a quarter, and download the detailed statement. Compare that statement with the registered-work list and the usage you can document. A missing line is a question about the work, licence, reporting period or matching data; it is not proof of nonpayment.<\/p>\n

Ask VCPMC which work record and usage period a questioned line refers to, supplying the title, writers, agreed shares and supporting contract. Then compare the society statement with the master statement from your distributor. The separate-ledger approach also helps explain why Vietnam\u2019s reported 24% rise in copyright collections<\/a> does not establish what any individual writer received.<\/p>\n

There is a regional precedent for doing this before money becomes difficult to trace: Thailand\u2019s MCT rules distinguish unmatched works from disputed shares<\/a>. Vietnam\u2019s published member guidance does not state the same suspense deadline, so do not import it. The shared lesson is operational: record the composition and its owners as carefully as the master.
