train its AI models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amended complaint, filed on September 19, 2025, in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts and obtained by\u00a0<em>InterSpace Daily,<\/em>\u00a0introduces damaging new allegations that\u00a0<strong>Suno<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cacquired many (if not all) of the copyrighted sound recordings in its training data by illicitly downloading them from YouTube using a notorious method of music piracy known as \u2018stream ripping.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint suggests that&nbsp;<strong>Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;may have \u2018stream-ripped\u2019&nbsp;<strong>millions of copyrighted sound recordings<\/strong>&nbsp;to train its model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The timing of the new allegations appears directly connected to\u00a0Anthropic\u2019s recent\u00a0<strong>USD $1.5 billion<\/strong>\u00a0settlement\u00a0with authors, who claimed the service obtained pirated books to train its AI models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Universal Music Group<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sony Music Entertainment<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Warner Music Group<\/strong>\u00a0now claim that Suno circumvented\u00a0<strong>YouTube\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0technological protection measures \u2013 specifically its \u201crolling cipher\u201d encryption \u2013 to illegally download and copy their copyrighted recordings for use in training its AI music generation models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read their amended complaint in full&nbsp;<a here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Anthropic<\/strong>&nbsp;settlement, confirmed earlier this month, has clearly emboldened the record labels to pursue more aggressive legal strategies against AI companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels now argue that&nbsp;<strong>Suno\u2019s actions<\/strong>&nbsp;constitute a breach of the Copyright Act\u2019s anti-circumvention provisions, which state that \u201cno person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amended complaint maintains the original lawsuit\u2019s core allegations, filed in June 2024, that<strong>&nbsp;Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;copied and ingested \u201cdecades worth of the world\u2019s most popular sound recordings\u201d without permission to train its AI models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels are now seeking statutory damages of up to&nbsp;<strong>$150,000<\/strong>&nbsp;per work infringed, as well as up to&nbsp;<strong>$2,500<\/strong>&nbsp;for each act of circumvention of technological measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also requesting injunctive relief to prevent&nbsp;<strong>Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;from continuing to circumvent YouTube\u2019s protections and infringe their copyrights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suno has previously attempted to justify its conduct by claiming&nbsp;<strong>\u2018fair use\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;protections under US copyright law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels describe this tactic as \u201ca tacit admission of&nbsp;<strong>Suno\u2019s illegal copying<\/strong>, as fair use only comes into play when an unauthorized use of a copyrighted work needs to be justified.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint notes that Suno has\u00a0raised\u00a0<strong>USD $125 million<\/strong>\u00a0in funding, valuing it at approximately\u00a0<strong>$500 million<\/strong>, and claims over\u00a0<strong>12 million users<\/strong>\u00a0have created music using its service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuno further touts a roster of high-profile backers and has monetized its service, charging users up to&nbsp;<strong>$24 per month<\/strong>&nbsp;for its highest subscription tier,\u201d reads the complaint. \u201cNone of that would be possible without the vast troves of copyrighted sound recordings that Suno copied to train its AI models.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amended filing includes a potentially damaging admission from&nbsp;<strong>Antonio Rodriguez<\/strong>, a partner at venture capital firm Matrix Partners and one of Suno\u2019s earliest investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez is quoted as saying his firm invested in&nbsp;<strong>Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;with full knowledge that the company might face lawsuits from copyright owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHonestly, if we had deals with labels when this company got started, I probably wouldn\u2019t have invested in it. I think they needed to make this product without the constraints,\u201d Rodriguez&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/suno-could-get-sued-by-the-record-business-whos-backing-it-with-125m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By \u201cconstraints,\u201d the labels argue, Rodriguez was referring to \u201cthe need to adhere to ordinary copyright rules and seek permission from rightsholders to copy and use their works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint alleges Rodriguez was willing to \u201cunderwrite\u201d the costs of potential lawsuits because he expected his investment in<strong>&nbsp;Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;to be profitable despite damages owed to copyright owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suno\u2019s alleged practice of<strong>\u00a0stream ripping<\/strong>\u00a0was made public on September 2, 2025, after the<strong>\u00a0International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP)<\/strong>\u00a0shared evidence with<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/billboard\/\">Billboard<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0RIAA\u00a0complaint, this evidence consisted of \u201cprivate datasets that demonstrate the illegal scraping of copyrighted sound recordings from YouTube by Suno.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels explain that&nbsp;<strong>YouTube<\/strong>&nbsp;employs a \u201crolling cipher\u201d encryption measure to control access to licensed content and prevent unauthorized downloading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This encryption creates two different URLs for any given video \u2013 a page URL visible to users for the webpage where video playback occurs, and a file URL not visible to users for the video file itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe file URL is encrypted using a complex and periodically changing algorithm \u2013 the \u2018rolling cipher\u2019 \u2013 that is designed to impede external access to the underlying YouTube video files, thereby preventing or inhibiting any downloading, copying, or distribution of the videos,\u201d the complaint explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these protections, the labels allege&nbsp;<strong>Suno<\/strong>&nbsp;employed
