{"id":6395,"date":"2026-06-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/kpop-demon-hunters-impact-on-asian-music-normalization-one-year-on\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T00:00:00","slug":"kpop-demon-hunters-impact-on-asian-music-normalization-one-year-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/kpop-demon-hunters-impact-on-asian-music-normalization-one-year-on\/","title":{"rendered":"KPop Demon Hunters&#8217; Impact on Asian Music Normalization, One Year On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One year after the animated feature \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/netflix-and-aeg-presents-announce-k-pop-demon-hunters-concert-tour\/\">KPop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u201d became a record-breaking hit, the music company that placed two of its artists in the film says the project has accelerated conversations about Asian representation in music, while underscoring that full normalization remains a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JADED<\/strong>, founded by <strong>Jing Wang<\/strong> and led by president <strong>Cathleen Cher<\/strong>, operates across artist development, marketing, management, label services, distribution and live events. The company booked <strong>Audrey Nuna<\/strong> and <strong>REI AMI<\/strong> for its showcase at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sxsw.com\">SXSW<\/a> (South by Southwest) 2024, where executives from Sony saw them perform. Sony subsequently cast both as singing voices for the demon-hunting K-pop trio HUNTR\/X in the film: Nuna as Mira, and REI AMI as Zoey.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s success has been followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/the-black-label-lands-80m-investment-led-by-tencent-music-and-krafton\/\">structural moves<\/a> in the industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordingacademy.com\">The Recording Academy<\/a> added a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category to the <strong>GRAMMYs<\/strong>, and <strong>Warner Music Asia-Pacific<\/strong> launched <strong>Listen Up<\/strong>, an accelerator program aimed at elevating artists from the region to global prominence.<\/p>\n<h2>Representation vs. Normalization<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jing Wang:<\/strong> \u201cThe undeniable scale of KPDH\u2019s reach goes a very long way towards proving demand and making culture more accessible and less \u2018foreign.\u2019 It\u2019s a historic step forward, but it also highlights the challenges that Asian artists continue to face in the industry. The truth is that success stories like KPDH in the western media market are still anomalies, and Asian artists constantly have to walk the line between being minimized to their cultural identity and being recognized for their actual artistry. Mass market representation in projects like KPDH are a crucial driver of <a href=\"https:\/\/interspacemusic.com\/blog\/diaspora-streams-global-stages-how-musics-new-geography-is-redrawing-the-map\/\">cultural adoption<\/a>, but the phrase we use a lot is \u2018representation is the first step, normalization is the goal.\u2019 But we need to get through the door before we can rearrange the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cathleen Cher:<\/strong> \u201cThere&#8217;s so much authenticity in the Korean representation, but it&#8217;s a universal story which is why the film resonated on such a global scale. Although so many barriers were broken down, the challenge of having K-pop be the most recognizable representation of Asian artists is that other artists may be pigeonholed into a genre that is not representative of the music they make or the culture they come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wang pointed to the response to the song \u201cGolden\u201d as a validating signal. \u201cIt\u2019s technically a K-pop song, but its reception maps to a traditional pop song. It&#8217;s a subtle difference, but it is an important one, and one that we strive to replicate and expand.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Inside the Sony Collaboration<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cher:<\/strong> \u201cObviously, major labels have a lot more resources, but that doesn&#8217;t necessarily equate to success. Being as nuanced as we are, we really understand who an artist is and put them in places like our festival, which gets them in front of the right people. Also, we know how to market those artists in a way that larger entities may not understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wang:<\/strong> \u201cMajors cast a wide net. We cast a deep one. We really have to believe in the artists that we work with, not just in their talent but in them as people. This process has shown the world the skill, drive, and intelligence of REI and of all three women who were on this journey together. This project required REI and the rest of HUNTR\/X to step into characters, rather than to showcase their own creative identities. Everybody really understood the assignment, but also what the success of this project meant for their solo careers, and leveraged that momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Ecosystem and Access<\/h2>\n<p>Asked whether Sony remains in JADED\u2019s corner for future projects, Wang said, \u201cI hope so! I can&#8217;t say enough good things about the music creative affairs team at Sony. Genuinely, they&#8217;re good people. Our industry relationships with the likes of Sony are a tenet of our ecosystem. This depth of relationship exists for us across gaming, movies, recorded music, and live entertainment. Consistency, competency, and integrity strengthens those bonds and creates credibility. It takes the entire ecosystem for a story like KPop Demon Hunters to occur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wang described the access a major studio provides as \u201ca big door for us to walk through,\u201d but noted the tension of wanting to change systems without yet being able to alter the underlying architecture. \u201cIt starts with people. How do we engage people in decision-making roles? That fabric is woven over many years. It&#8217;s a value proposition that has to be validated over and over again to maintain that trust. That part of our job is most important, but least visible. You see the success of Kpop Demon Hunters, but how much work did we have to do for things to align to get that one particular door open?
