RuthAnne<\/strong><\/a>, the songwriter whose catalog has generated nearly 6.9 billion streams<\/strong> across more than 140 tracks<\/strong>, reflected on her two-decade career at a recent Spotify<\/strong><\/a> event in London.<\/p>\n

A Catalog of Billions<\/h2>\n

Her first major cut, JoJo<\/strong><\/a>‘s 2006 single “Too Little Too Late,”<\/strong> has amassed over 379 million streams<\/strong> on Spotify alone. The track, written when RuthAnne was 17, launched a career that would span credits for artists including Niall Horan<\/strong>, Britney Spears<\/strong>, Martin Garrix<\/strong>, Bebe Rexha<\/strong>, One Direction<\/strong>, aespa<\/strong>, Avicii<\/strong>, John Legend<\/strong>, Ti\u00ebsto<\/strong>, Pixie Lott<\/strong>, Westlife<\/strong>, Kelly Clarkson<\/strong>, Diana Ross<\/strong>, and M\u00e5neskin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her top five most-streamed songs account for 4.44 billion streams<\/strong>. Two of those, “In the Name of Love”<\/strong> by Martin Garrix and Bebe Rexha, and “Slow Hands”<\/strong> by Niall Horan, have each surpassed one billion streams on the platform. Last year, she also published a book on songwriting, “It’s Not Just A Song.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

London Celebration<\/h2>\n

Spotify hosted the gathering to celebrate creativity in the U.K. and Ireland, bringing together policy and arts leaders. The program included a fireside chat between RuthAnne and Dustee Jenkins<\/strong>, Spotify’s Global Chief Public Affairs Officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cRuthAnne’s career is a powerful reminder of the impact songwriters have on culture,\u201d Jenkins said. \u201cWhether writing global hits for some of the world’s biggest artists or stepping into the spotlight as an artist herself, she has consistently combined extraordinary talent with authenticity, creativity, and a deep understanding of what connects people through music. We were honored to celebrate her and bring together leaders from across the U.K.’s and Ireland’s creative industries for an evening of conversation and inspiration.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In a separate interview, RuthAnne shared insights into her creative process and the stories behind some of her biggest songs.<\/p>\n

The Breakthrough: ‘Too Little Too Late’<\/h2>\n

RuthAnne recalled her first major co-writing session in Los Angeles with Billy Steinberg<\/strong> and Josh Alexander<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cI had just arrived in Los Angeles, and it was my first big co-writing session. I remember being very nervous but really excited because I was working on it with Billy Steinberg, who is a legendary songwriter, and Josh Alexander, who is just amazing. Both were so welcoming and encouraging of my ideas. When the song came out two years later, it changed my life forever.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She believes the song endures because it transports listeners: \u201cI think fans still resonate with it because it brings them back to that exact time and place, screaming along in their cars or feeling that way about someone. The video was so iconic as well, and it still feels relevant today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writing Across Genres<\/h2>\n

Asked about moving between pop, dance, and other styles, RuthAnne pointed to a unifying principle:<\/p>\n

\u201cI love music across all genres and I’ve always enjoyed writing in different styles. The one thing that always stays the same in the process is the drive to write something that’s universal and makes people feel like they need to do something, whether that’s cry, dance, or laugh. I’m always trying to make sure the feeling is at the heart of my work.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Artist-Songwriter Bond<\/h2>\n

She described the collaborative dynamic as central to the process:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis relationship is probably the most important part of the songwriting process. I always want the artists I work with to feel comfortable and safe to say what’s in their heart and to sing what they feel. That space lets us get the best out of them, and allows me to help fill in the pieces they need or want support with. A lot of the time, songwriters are like therapists; through conversations and good energy in the room, a song appears, and that makes it feel even more special.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

RuthAnne also highlighted her appreciation for tools that surface songwriting credits, such as SongDNA<\/strong>: \u201cWhen I hear a song I like, my favorite thing is to go look at who created it. I love SongDNA because it makes that so easy to do. It lets fans go behind the scenes and they get to see every person involved in making the song. That’s so important because songwriting is really a team effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Fateful Session<\/h2>\n

The song that holds the deepest personal meaning, she said, is \u201cIn the Name of Love,\u201d written during a period of doubt:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a special connection to ‘In the Name of Love’ because when I wrote it, I was really struggling. I was very close to giving up music. The day I helped write the song feels like fate. Me, Ilsey, and Matt Rad weren’t scheduled to write that day, but all of our sessions were canceled on us. So we got together and wrote ‘In the Name of Love’ in 45 minutes. It was a special writing moment that felt really magical.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She added: \u201cWorking on that song showed me I had to keep going because you never know when the song that can change your life is coming.
