Start with a producer, because Brazilian funk always does. Pedro Sampaio does not just perform arenas, he builds the beats other people ride, and that production-first economy is exactly why funk’s 2026 numbers should change how a Brazilian act picks a distributor.<\/p>\n

Spotify’s Loud and Clear 2026 report, covered by The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, named Brazilian funk the fastest-growing genre to clear $100 million in payouts last year, ahead of K-pop.<\/p>\n

The number that reframes funk<\/h2>\n

That $100 million line lands inside a bigger figure. Spotify’s total payouts to the industry passed $11 billion in 2025, a $1 billion jump year over year, per the same report.<\/p>\n

Funk grew fastest inside that pool. Not sertanejo, not global pop, funk. A genre that lived on favela sound systems and pirate CD tables 15 years ago is now a top earner on the largest paid streaming platform on earth.<\/p>\n

Half the streams are already abroad<\/h2>\n

Here is the part indie artists miss. Spotify says about half of the average artist’s streams now come from outside their home country, and songs in 16 languages reached the Global Top 50, double the count from 2020.<\/p>\n

For funk that is not a forecast, it is current reality. Anitta took funk-inflected pop onto international charts years ago, Ludmilla fills arenas, and the sound now moves through TikTok edits in cities that have never heard of Rio’s Baile scene, as Rio Times<\/a> documents.<\/p>\n

An artist whose audience is half foreign cannot be shipped to Spotify Brazil alone. That audience listens on Apple Music in Portugal, on Anghami across the Gulf diaspora, on YouTube everywhere, and increasingly on the DSPs a Sao Paulo-only strategy never reaches.<\/p>\n

Funk’s real problem is splits, not reach<\/h2>\n

Funk is producer-built music. One track can carry a lead artist, two featured MCs, and a beatmaker who owns the instrumental, all expecting a defined cut.<\/p>\n

DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the metadata standard DSPs use to read who made a recording and who gets paid. When funk goes global and a single track earns across 40 territories, sloppy DDEX delivery is how a beatmaker in Belford Roxo never sees the money a stream generated in Lisbon.<\/p>\n

This is where the distributor choice stops being about upload speed. It becomes about whether your splits survive the trip abroad.<\/p>\n

What a funk act should ask before signing<\/h2>\n

Before you pick a distributor for a genre earning most of its money overseas, get answers on these:<\/p>\n

  • Do you deliver native DDEX metadata, or do you rekey my credits by hand<\/li>\n
  • Can I set producer and feature splits at upload, so a beatmaker gets paid automatically per stream<\/li>\n
  • Where do I see royalties by track, by territory, in near real time<\/li>\n
  • What happens to my catalog’s export earnings if a track breaks on TikTok in a market I never targeted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
