China grew 20.1% in 2025, the fastest of any major market, and passed Germany to rank fourth in the world. That figure comes straight from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/ifpi-global-report-2026-highlights-vinyl-china-ai-deepfakes\/\">IFPI 2026 takeaways reported by Billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a frontier story anymore. It is the fourth-biggest recorded-music economy on earth, and it runs on platforms most Western distributors have never once delivered a file to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two companies, five apps, 190 million payers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Streaming drives close to 90% of China&#8217;s recorded-music revenue, and two firms control almost all of it. Tencent Music Entertainment runs QQ Music, Kugou, Kuwo and WeSing. NetEase Cloud Music is the challenger, with Alibaba holding a smaller share. Between them they count roughly 190 million paying subscribers, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/what-makes-chinas-music-market-so-different\/\">Hypebot&#8217;s breakdown of the market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tencent Music&#8217;s own numbers show the scale:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full-year 2025 revenue of RMB 32.9 billion, up 15.8%, per the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/press-release\/tencent-music-entertainment-group-announces-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2025\">results filing on Nasdaq<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Music subscription revenue of RMB 17.66 billion, about US$2.53 billion, up 16%, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/data\/tencent-music-entertainment-music-revenue-and-music-subscription-revenue\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a><\/li>\n<li>127.4 million paying users, up 5.3%, at a monthly ARPPU of RMB 11.9, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2026\/03\/17\/tencent-music-stock-q4-2025\/\">Digital Music News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ARPPU means average revenue per paying user. At RMB 11.9 a month it is low by Western standards, which is exactly why IFPI flags China&#8217;s 1.4 billion people as mostly untapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NetEase Cloud Music told a subtler story. Segment revenue slipped 2.4% to RMB 7.8 billion, but membership subscription revenue rose to RMB 5.1 billion from RMB 4.5 billion, and online music services revenue grew 12%, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/netease-cloud-music-inc-reports-fiscal-year-2025-financial-results-302684933.html\">fiscal-year 2025 results<\/a>. The paying base is still expanding even where headline revenue dipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The delivery gap most distributors will not name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the uncomfortable part for a self-releasing artist or an indie label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby and most majors-focused distributors deliver to Spotify, Apple Music and a familiar Western set. QQ Music, Kugou, Kuwo and NetEase Cloud Music are frequently not on their standard store list, or sit behind an opt-in few artists ever find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means catalog can be entirely absent from the fourth-largest market in the world. Not underperforming. Absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the plumbing is different in China<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China&#8217;s DSPs, a DSP being a digital service provider like a streaming platform, do not ingest the way Spotify does. They expect DDEX-native delivery. DDEX means Digital Data Exchange, the metadata standard that lets a release, its splits and its rights move between systems cleanly. They also expect local metadata handling and, in practice, a delivery relationship that one-click uploaders rarely maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add the discovery layer. A soundbite going viral on Douyin, the mainland version of TikTok, or on Kuaishou can push a track into editorial and lift streams overnight. If the track is not on QQ Music or NetEase when that happens, the moment converts to nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What an artist should actually check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two questions decide whether China&#8217;s growth touches your royalties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does your distributor deliver to QQ Music, Kugou, Kuwo and NetEase Cloud Music, and can it show you the reporting from each?<\/li>\n<li>Are your splits and rights encoded in DDEX so payouts arrive clean, not lumped into an &#8220;other territories&#8221; line?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">InterSpace Distribution delivers DDEX-native to the Chinese DSPs Western uploaders skip, with per-platform reporting and transparent splits paid through wallet.interspace.ink.
