South Africa now runs a music export business, and Amapiano is the product. Spotify told a Johannesburg press briefing in May that South African artists earned R504 million, roughly $30.69 million, on the platform in 2025. That is up 28% year on year and nearly double the 2023 figure, per TechCabal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The number that matters most for anyone signing a distribution deal is buried in the same disclosure. Seventy-four percent of that money came from listeners outside South Africa, as IOL<\/a> also reported.<\/p>\n

The genre that outgrew its home market<\/h2>\n

Amapiano stopped being a local sound years ago. Spotify data cited across South African outlets puts the genre’s growth at more than 5,000% since 2018, from roughly 100 million streams in 2020 to 300 million the following year, and it has kept climbing since.<\/p>\n

In 2025 it was still the center of gravity. Kabza De Small was the most-streamed South African artist for another year, pulling close to 200 million Spotify streams, and his album Bab’ Motha<\/em> debuted at No. 9 on Spotify’s Global Album Chart, a first for a South African Amapiano project, per Music In Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The home charts tell the other half of the story. South African artists held roughly two-thirds of the songs on Spotify’s local Daily Top 50 across the year, and the overwhelming majority were Amapiano or Amapiano-adjacent. A genre that dominates its own country and pays out three-quarters of its royalties abroad is not a domestic scene. It is an export.<\/p>\n

Why the export split is a distribution problem<\/h2>\n

When 74% of the money arrives from overseas, the mechanics of collecting it stop being an afterthought. Cross-border royalties mean multiple currencies, multiple tax regimes, and dozens of stores each reporting on their own cycle.<\/p>\n
