France just posted its tenth straight year of growth, and it did it almost entirely on music made at home. Recorded revenue reached 1.071 billion euros in 2025, up 3.9% year on year, according to figures from local trade body SNEP reported by Music Business Worldwide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Streaming crossed 700 million euros for the first time, landing at 702 million, up 5.7%. Paid subscription did the heavy lifting at 553 million euros, up 5.9%, across 12.6 million subscriptions.<\/p>\n

Here is the part majors-focused distributors underweight: France pays its own. Three-quarters of the top 200 albums of the year were French-produced, and rap and pop each accounted for roughly a third of total streaming consumption.<\/p>\n

A market that rewards local catalog<\/h2>\n

Nine of the ten albums that went Diamond in France in 2025 were rap records made in France, per SNEP’s certifications, as flagged by Music Ally<\/a>. This is not a market where a French artist needs a US crossover to earn. The money is in-country, in French, and it is growing.<\/p>\n

Two format stories sit underneath the streaming line. Vinyl passed 100 million euros for the first time, up 14.8% to 113 million. Ad-supported audio jumped 12% to 84 million euros. Streaming video, the format that pays worst, fell 2.9%.<\/p>\n

The home DSP changed what a stream is worth<\/h2>\n

France is also the headquarters market of Deezer, and Deezer has spent two years rewriting the rules of who gets paid. DSP means Digital Service Provider, the streaming platform itself.<\/p>\n

Deezer’s Artist-Centric Payment System stopped treating every stream as equal. Tracks from artists with at least 1,000 monthly listens from 500 unique listeners get a payout boost, and non-music noise and functional audio no longer draw from the royalty pool. When the model launched in 2023, Deezer deleted 26 million tracks<\/a> that failed the bar.<\/p>\n

Then came the fraud filter. Deezer now says more than 20,000 fully AI-generated tracks are delivered to it every day, double the rate of early 2025, and that up to 70% of the streams attached to those tracks are fraudulent. Its detection tool flags 100% AI output from models like Suno and Udio, and the flagged streams are excluded from royalty payments entirely.<\/p>\n

“We’ve detected a significant uptick in delivery of AI generated music only in the past few months and we see no sign of it slowing down,” CEO Alexis Lanternier said.<\/p>\n

Why this matters for an indie label<\/h2>\n

The practical consequence for a real artist is that clean, honest delivery is now worth more on Deezer than raw stream count. The platform is actively subtracting the streams it does not trust before it splits the pool.<\/p>\n
